Angel | Renting a room to my sister and bf? |
OK, right now Im renting a house for $1800. I currently have 3 other roommates, my cousin, my sister and her bf. The rent is split 3 ways, so my sister and her bf pay $550 and so does my cousin, I pay $700 since I have the master bedroom. My cousin thinks I should lower her rent and have my sister pay more rent since there are two persons occupying one room. My sister has low income and barely makes it on her own. Her loser BF doesn't work, he basically is the house keeper since he stays home all day and does nothing, I have him play house keeper, I figure its the least he can do. Should I have my sister pay more rent than my cousin? Should I split the rent 4 ways instead of 3 ways and tell her BF to get a job, even if he does get a job it would probably be something minimum wage. What should I do in this case? I want to be fair and don't want anyone to feel that Im taking advantage of them. |

The rent split seems reasonable, since your sister and her BF only occupy one bedroom.
The utilities should be split four ways though. |

Rent like this is usually by the room, so your sister and BF have one room and should pay their adjusted 1/3. |

Like the above poster says...the rent is per room. So if your cousin needs to...have someone move in w/her and share HER 1/3 of the rent. |

No, your sister should not pay more for rent. Rent should definitely be split by the room. Now, if they have a significantly larger room, maybe then they should pay a little more. I do think that they should each pay for 1/4 of the bills though. Utilities and other bills should be split per person. |

You don't need to raise the rent on your sister.
They both SHARE a room, so they can SHARE the rent between the two.
Your cousin is just greedy.
Now, if there were four people in four rooms, that would be different.
It's not like your sister's boyfriend is getting a room to himself. He's only using half a room. |

You don't want anyone to feel like you're taking advantage of them and yet, your sister and her boyfriend are taking advantage of you.
If they invited a few more people to share the room with them so they could all pay less, would you approve? Probably not.

its your house. YOU get your bed room reguardless...if the house is in yer name. there are also 4 people there. its basically like your sister is paying and her BF is free loading because he's not paying you to live there. the rent should be divided up there 4 different ways. 450/person. and make SURE they clean up after themselves. tell them its not a community pig pen. clean up or get out. how would you be taking advantage of them? if anything, they are taking advantage of you sweetie!!!
