giiiiiiiiirlfrien' | Renting an apartment? |
My boyfriend and I (we are 18 and 19) are planning on renting an apartment really close to our college.
The fee is 450 a month (with everything except for electricity). We have a pooch and we both have jobs that we plan on going into full time with. Right now us combined make around $1800 a month and once we go full time I plan on us making around $2000+ a month. Our jobs are within 10-15 minutes driving distance from the apartment.
My questions to you are:
(1) is this apartment a good deal?
(2) Do you think we would be able to afford it?
(3) What exactly do you need in order to rent an apartment. (credit, etc.)
thanks! |

well, it depends where you are renting. you can ask the person you're planning on renting from about the approx. cost of electric and their requirements for renting (are dogs allowed?). also ask if the renter takes care of problems like repairs. shop around town too, to see what else is out there and for what price.
keep in mind you'll need money for food, gas, phone service, cleaning supplies, personal items, your dog etc. also, if something comes up, like a car needs service, you or your dog get sick etc. you'll need to pay for that too.
some good sites to shop around:

good luck! |

450 a month isn't bad. That's what I pay for a one bedroom dinky piece of crap. lol. Anyway, since it's pretty cheap, they probably won't do a background or credit check (and because you're young) Your rent payment should never be more than 25% of your monthly earnings so 450 is totally affordable for you and your boyfriend. |

Sounds affordable. Don't forget possible security deposit and possible pet deposit. As far as a good deal, only you can answer that. Is there a pool, or rec. room, laundry, etc, etc. There are some amenities that are deal breakers for me. |

you can definitely afford it! with everything included? oh yea!! that's a really really good deal! i just hope it's not in a bad area. some apartments require SOME kind of renter's credit but there are some willing to work with Frist Time Renters just go into their leasing office one day and ask how they work with first time renters. and they might ask for a deposit for your pooch! sometimes they can be pricy depending on the size. some just dont' allow pets and others charge up the butt!!!! even tot he point where they charge a monthly fee to have them. my advice...just ask! : ) hope this helps and good hunting! |

At 450 per month it sounds like you may be renting a studio.
Apartments can be high in rent. Paying electric is normal.
Affording an apartment depends on what else you owe on a monthly basis. Also there is usually a credit check done and there is a fee for the credit check which is about 25 to 35 dollars one time fee. |

yes, yes. depends on the landlord... some do credit checks and background checks and some don't |

Well, without seeing the apartment, it is extremely cheap. But then again, I'm living in the most expensive part of the country so it's hard to compare. Your living expenses should equal approximately 30% of your gross income. So I would think you should easily be able to afford the apartment. It depends where you are renting from if they will require credit checks. They may just want to make sure you don't have bad credit, as opposed to no credit. Rental agencies may be more likely to do credit checks than private homeowners. |

$450 sounds very cheap for an apartment. Is it in a safe neighborhood. Is it in good condition?
Each of you make a list of all of your monthly expenses, car note, car insurance, credit cards, personal loans, school expenses. Add them togother. Then factor in daily living expenses, what about clothing, food, entertainment, household items (you gotta have detergent, soap, toothpaste and potty paper). Pooch's are expensive too, who will buy the dog food...what if pooch get's sick. What if either one of you become ill and can't work, do you have health insurance? Who pays your tuition, if it's your parents, will they continue to pay if you move out? Just realize it's very expensive to maintain a household even for two adults who are working full-time. Be prepared for emergencies. Consider putting it off for a semester to save up a little money. Also, how will you divide the bills and expenses between you. If it doesn't work out, will you be able to move back home?
Also, many landlords require a credit history, first & last months rent along with a security deposit. A non-refundable pet deposit is usually required for tenants with pets. |

I think that your 18 and think that your an adult. 2000 a month isn't that much money. Have you ever attended college full time and worked full time? It is a challenge for anyone. I would suggest living at home if you can, work part time and put as much money as you can into an IRA, money market account and savings account. This way when you are done with school you will have money for a down payment for a house and not a bad memory of a $hitty little apartment you rented with your boyfriend right out of high school. |

I can’t tell you whether or not this is a good deal, as I am not familiar with your area. As far as income, are you talking gross or net? I gross $3125/month and my rent is $665. My girlfriend is also dependent upon my income. In addition to the apartment I also pay for food, cable, utilities, and a car payment. On my salary things are a bit tight but not too bad. Your credit probably doesn’t need to be that good, but you probably need a minimum income of some sort. Good luck. |

you should be good
sounds like a good deal
and what you need is all depending on the place you rent from
most of the time just a diposit and a backround check |

450$ rent
250$ average electricity bill
100$ average water bill
300$ average food for 2 per month
Total...1100$
Than add car notes, insurance, spending money, etc. You should be well off with that, as long as you don't have any other major spending costs. |
