I asked this question last night but didn't get any responses. Perhaps you Real Estate section folks are morning people? ;) I've also added a couple of questions to the end.
Sitting here in my tiny 555 square foot apartment affectionately known as "The Shoebox", I'm daydreaming about DOWNSIZING! Here's what I'm looking at:

I live in Southern Colorado, and I'm curious if anyone might be able to estimate what it would cost me to build a house like this (the 261 square foot model, I don't need/want the extra bedroom), excluding the land purchased to put it on. I know it would cost more than an existing house, but by how much?
Would any of you Yahoo! Answerers ever consider living in a Tiny House such as this -- do any of you live in a place like this already? If so, what's it like?
ADDED: I have read a little bit about "minimum size" laws. What sort of laws like this are in place in Colorado? What other sort of things might get in the way of making my wee little house dream come true?

You need to call the building department for that county, see if they will even issue a permit for a house this size. I doubt it. You have to have a kitchen, seperate sleeping area (can be open floorplan) and a completely closed off bathroom. I don't think you can fit these things into that space and get an occupancy permit, but not knowing the location I can't really research it.
As far as cost, it will be high, as most of that space will be kitchen, I would estimate it around 60-70k.
You still have to grade the property, pour a foundation, obtain the same permits, install a kitchen, bethroom and heat. |
