Responsible for carpet after 10 years in apartment?
I recently moved out of my apartment after being there for 10 years. The apartment is in pretty much the condition you'd expect after 10 years of living in it. Nothing too bad but normal wear and tear. I recently received some bills from the apartment management.... They want $100 for carpet cleaning and $100 for bathroom and kitchen cleaning. I don't really mind the bathroom/kitchen stuff but I thought the carpet cleaning was ridiculous. Should I be responsible for carpet cleaning after leaving there for 10 years? Shouldn't they just get new carpet? Are their any laws for this? (I live in Wisconsin)

if you are not counting on them for a reference, then tell them to pound sand.

Classy Granny
There are no laws saying when carpet has to be replaced. You should not have assumed because you lived there 10 years that they would be doing that. If you didn't clean it before you left and they had to do it, you are responsible for paying for it.

acermill
If the carpet is in acceptable condition for a new tenant, you should have cleaned it before you left. Dirt on a carpet is not normal wear and tear. In Wisconsin, there are no laws relative to the life of carpeting in a rental. If the landlord deems it sufficiently good for a new tenant, you need to clean off your dirt from ten years of living on same.

Just say no!

They know good and dayum well that apt needs new carpet! cheap behinds! I was in mine for 4 years and they replaced mine and did some upgrades to the apt overall. There is NO WAY they should charge you for that

LMC
Unfortunately the apartment is theirs and they can do what they want with it. You only signed a contract to rent, not own it. I totally agree with you but I guess you have to follow their rules. Fight it maybe.

homegirl
If the carpet was fairly new when you moved in you should have it professionally cleaned when you move. Some carpeting has a useful life of 5 years, some of 10 and some of 20 or more. Much depends on the quality of the carpet and the amount of wear and tear. If you do not vacuum and clean carpets regularly they wear out very quickly.

I know in the state of Virginia Judges only allow a five year life span on carpet. A management compnay would lose that case and a judge would award you your monies back.

First of all, check the landlord/tenant laws for your state. I would also send them a letter or call the manager or corporate offices and tell them that you should not have been charged for the carpet. Also, most apartments don't use the highest grade of carpeting, and thus it would have been expected to replace after 10 years. This is not reasonable to expect carpet would be in great condition. Most apartment complexes will change carpeting after 3-5 years. Also, Most state laws provide that once you challenge the management about your full deposit not being returned within a specified term, that you can sue for 2-3 times that amount if they don't respond to you or unlawfully withold your deposit. That's why most don't like to be sued to get the deposit back, as 2-3 times that amount could cost them big time. They also can not give a bad reference because they don't like you. They can only give out factual information, and most apartments only want to know that you didn't tear up your apartment and that you paid on time. So decide if the fight is worth it for you, but make sure you check out your laws there.

That is gross. The life span of carpet is maybe 5 years. I bet the court would see it your way but you are not going to sue over 100 dollars. So try, a very official letter requesting your 100 dollars. Because they do not want to go to court for 100 dollars.
