Roomate problem?
I recently bought a house on my own. I got a renter to help allivaite the added costs of living. But this current roomate seems to think he "runs the show". He takes things of mine and uses them w/o asking or until he's already done it. I have let him have some freedoms but I think its getting out of control.
The most recent event is he has a gun he keeps down stairs in my basement that discharged a "Blank" went off. I found no damage but there seems to be a general lack of concern about what he does around my house. He also has hinted he has to leave town for a couple months and doesn't want to pay rent while he is out of town. Of course his stuff would stay in the house. He is planning on leaving at the end of the month or around X-mas and he has been paying at the begining of each month direct deposit to my account. I noticed today that there was no payment made. I feel I need to kick him out but am trying to find other options if someone has a suggestion I'm all eyes

after years of renting our basement to crappy tenants (friends and otherwise) you just have to learn when enough is enough. if you dont feel comfortable with this guy in your house get him the hell out!!! bottom line... its your house your mortgage your money and time and effort and stress........ you dont want some jack*ss screwing it all up. kick him out

kick him out - you'll feel better. people don't change that much

this guy is taking liberties with your house. honestly the house rules should have been laid out when you made the agreement to let him move in.

the easiest solution wud be to kick him out but i think that first you should take authority of the situation it is your house after all, remind him that its YOUR SPACE not his, that way if if you have to end up kicking him out you'll know what to do if your in that kinda situation.

It sounds like you need to notify the tenant in writing now that he has 30 days to leave. Be specific as to the reasons. The gun discharging is a good reason, leaving town and not wanting to pay rent is another good reason. You have just cause to evict him. If you don't want to evict yet, let him know in writing that if he does not continue to pay rent, his belongings will be put in storage at his expense.

Lease,It can't run off and not pay rent.No lease ,give him notice and the police department in some states ,need to know you gave notice.
Tell him you need the space and it blocking you from getting a renter. He has no respect for you or your space or place...

From what you said, it sounds like you have to take on the parent roll. Sit down and have a serious talk. Did you initially establish rules that about sharing items and whatever else is wrong? If not, now may be the time.

Secondly, what do you do when you see he’s used your stuff? Do you let it go to avoid conflict? Do you tell him not to do it but don’t offer any consequences? If you don’t say anything or just slap him on the wrist, he isn’t going to realize what a problem his behavior is.

Talk to the guy and see what he says. Of course you can ask him to leave. Just make sure you change the locks so he can’t return.

If you do take on a room mate again, put a written agreement in place. It doesn’t have to be a lease that binds your renter to stay for a year; it could simply address the issues you’re currently worried about like your rm being gone and not paying rent for two months.

Based on my personal experience, you would be better off without the roommate. This kind of person will cost you more in the long run. I would take the opportunity to get rid of him. I'm a little concerned about this "direct deposit" business. This would indicate that he has access to your checking account. I would close that account immediately and open another one that can only be accessed by you. I have always had problems with roommates who were demanding or threatening. If he has an unregistered firearm in your house, I would call the police. If this weapon is found in your house, you could be prosecuted. If this person is not some kind of life long friend or relative, kick him out immediately.

Talk to him, tell him what is and isn't acceptable. Give him the boot if he can't comply. Explain to him that you will need to get someone to cover the bills in his absence, his inability to pay rent is not acceptable - thus he should move out if he plans on not paying rent upfront. Make this clear before he leaves, otherwise you could be stuck with the responsibilty of holding his property. Good luck.
