Roomates in apartments?
ok, so im either moving to minnesota or North Dakota and I want to room with someone in a apartment. This sounds dumb, but someone was telling me if you look in the minnesota newspaper, people put it ads that they want a roomate. They are in college and only want to pay half the rent bill, so they get people to room with them so they only have to pay half? Is this true? If not, how else can i find someone to room with in a apartment?

Yes, people do advertise for shared rent. It's not unusual. If you do this, screen them good. They could be party monsters and your not. Or they could smoke and you do not. Make sure they have the money to pay for half of the deposit and security. Just be real careful.
If you don't find anyone, you could advertise.

Go online and in the search bar, type the city you moved to or moving to, then / and then room mates. You might find something by doing that.

Alot of college students who don't want to live on campus and rent apartments or houses nearby, do advertise for roomates, as do working people who can't afford to pay the whole amount of rent. I would check the newspapers online of the town you are moving to, some of them will probably have their classifieds online, and you could check craigslist.com for the city or town that you are moving near, people advertise on there as well.....

Pretty much no matter where you look for roommates, Minnesota or anywhere else in the United States, especially if it's in a college town, the majority of what you're going to find in the newspaper are college folks who want roommates so they can split the rent and utilities. College students are poor, so if they can save a few hundred a month by having a roomie, they're going to jump on it.

I am a graduate student and have roommates to split costs. I found my roommates through various sources. I did check the newspaper. I also checked the Marketplace section of Facebook.com which is a college networking site. There are other sites such as roommates.com/easyroommate.com/roommaten... that are all places to search for roommates. Other places to look are on bulletin boards around town (at the grocery store, for instance), or by walking around and looking at bulletin boards on college campuses.

Good luck.

Some places its more true than others. Stay near the college so the roomate will be another student. Trust me the world will pity you not - its might be about a shared experience sometimes but totally without heart in the end. Meaning you will be on a street corner and have to be in calculus class. So don't play no games.

I'm sure the Star Tribune has info on line as does St Paul Pioneer press. If you plan to stay south of the river the Thisweek Newspaper has those ad's. Also, try Rent.com and see if that works for you. If I can help futher, just email me

Yes, I've seen "roomate wanted" ads in the classifieds also, it's not something exclusive to Minnesota. There are never very many of them though.

Another option would be for you to put an ad in the local paper for the town you want to move to. For example, "20 something student seeking to share a house with one or two people of similar lifestyle. Can afford to pay $450/per month in rent and ultilities." Then include your phone number or email address so people can contact you.

Another thought I had is that people tend to post "room for rent" or "roomate wanted" ads at some local grocery stores where they they have a bulletin board for free ads. You didn't say how far away you would be moving, so this may not be a practical idea.

Um...if you're a college student, there's always the dorms too.

What's wrong with living alone? If you can afford it, there are definite benefits to having your own place over moving in with a complete stranger whom you may or may not get along with.

Good Luck!

Yes, many people put ads in paper. But, there is a better way. Go to roomates.com. You can look at other people profile, do your own and meet someone who you will LIKE to share a place with. It is a great website!
