Roommates been gone for a few weeks, can i still make her pay her part in bills?
my roommate hasn't been staying in our apartment since the third week in june. we just got some bills in for utilites and gas. can i still make her pay half even though she's been gone becuase she is still on the lease?

Yes the money for the utilities is part of what you are supose to be spliting. Half the heat and electricity does not just go away. Did her half of the house stay unairconditioned and her side of the fridge not cool?

Did she officially move out? If not she must pay. You are charged a minimal amount even if both of you are not there so she is responsible for her half no matter what!

Yes, if she is still is on the lease and hasn't made any verbal agreements definitely. If she is moving back in this she should continue to pay because you are holding her place of residence. If she is not moving back in she should at least pay the last month until you can get accustomed to making all of the payments on your own.

I guess that's a question for your conscience to answer. Personally, I don't think it's right to ask a roommate to pay utility bills based on usage (ie. electricity) when she hasn't been living there to contribute to the consumption of the utility. Fixed utilities like cable, which you both agreed to sign up for seems more reasonable.

Legally, the person whose name is on the account is liable for the bill. If it's in your name only you're going to have a tough time making her pay and all the while the utility company will be after you for the money. That's why I always put both roommates names and SSNs on the utilities.

Yes you can, even if you have to take her/him to small claims court.

Yup, she is on the lease and is expected to pay her part of the bills.

I think legally whomever the bills are in the name of owes. In the gas bill is in her name, she needs to pay it legally so just give her your half and consider it square.

I was in the same spot... of a year long lease, roommate wasn't there for the last six months but he still payed his half of the electric, rent, etc.

The issue here is expectations... your roomie set you up to expect 1/2 of the rent and bills to be paid so that's what she should live up to.

ya she still has to pay cause she hasnt moved out and her stuff is there.

collegestudent89
That's a good question. Well, it's not fair for her to pay bills that she hasn't used. On the other hand, you need to talk to her and tell her that if she's gonna live there, then she needs to LIVE there. Tell her you can't afford to pay bills by yourself and if she's not committed to having a roommate, then she can move out so you can get a roommate who can be responsible and pay bills like a grownup.
