lilli | Safe places to live in London? |
I'm thinking of buying my first house in London and was wondering what are the safest areas of London? Thanks! |

Don't listen to the others responding (mostly idiots). They've probably never lived here. London is a very safe city by international and national standards. Any major city will have some crime, but trust me when I say, I'd be happy walking through most parts of the city any time of day or night and that isn't the case with a lot of other places.
Obviously, the better off the area, the more likely it is to be safe. Hampstead and Belsize Park are great places to live. Chalk Farm is more affordable, but close to the centre.
London is one of the best cities in the world - you'll love it. |

First of all i would like to say that I think many people exaggerate when it comes to London being a terrible place with a lot of crime. There are of course some areas that are "safer" than others, like in all cities, but I think South Kensington is a nice place. I got a friend who lives there and it's thought of as safe. I also think Chelsea and Fulham are nice and safe, the latter a bit less expensive than S. Kensington or Chelsea. London is a lot of fun if you are young. Best of luck! |

I'd opt for the really posh areas like Chelsea, Primrose Hill etc but they are obviously extremely expensive so it depends on your budget. If you're buying in London though do make sure to do a LOT of background homework on the area your house will be in. Some parts are improving and others are just going straight downhill so do be very cautious and buy in the best area you can afford. |

Peckham if you have a gun...
i have lived in clapham common, wimbledon and Putney - all nice but expensive - try a commuter belt place like surbiton...15 mins to waterloo on express trains, nice area, by river etc etc.. |

Obviously the more you can pay the safer the area will be. Weighing it up, I would say with the massive increase in supply around the area, and the amount of security they have Canary Wharf is your best bet. |

Don't waste your money. London is ridiculously overpriced and there is no such thing as a totally safe area. I grew up within a mile of the aforementioned areas St. John's Wood, Hampstead and Primrose Hill and believe me, I knew people who would target these ares (for illicit purposes) purely because of the wealth of the residents. Besides, if you're looking to buy property in these areas, as well as certain other parts of London, you're looking at prices of, on average, about £1million for a house. |

I agree with Ed., compared to other cities, London is as safe as any. Look, bad things can happen anywhere, especially deep in the country with no witnesses. May I say that a life with Safety at the top of your list is no life at all. What about culture, joy, green space, sports facilities, somewhere for children to play, good transport links, libraries, restaurants, dancing ? I'm a pensioner, and I reckon I'll leave being safe to when I'm dead. |
