It's a government program for poor people where the government pays a majority of their rent for them. Landlords have to be signed up to accept Section 8. Unfortunately Section 8 housing often attracts riff raff and bad people. (NOT ALWAYS... this also could be single mothers and families). In my town, Section 8 housing is something to avoid, but it could be different in your town.

jcleann13
government assistance apts and sad to say that 9 out of 10 sec 8 apt is high crime! and so she was right avoid it

It's a program where the gov't pays all or a part of the rent for someone who can't afford it. It has a bad reputation because some tenants don't take care of the property since they don't have any money invested in it.

It is subsidized housing.

The Housing Choice Voucher Program is a type of Federal assistance provided by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) dedicated to sponsoring subsidized housing for low-income families and individuals. It is more commonly known as Section 8, the reference to the portion of the U.S. Housing Act of 1937 under which the original subsidy program was authorized.

starbrite.
Low rent housing that the goverment has approved for limited income people to rent.

It is a government subsidized program for middle to low-income families who otherwise could not afford to pay for rent without due hardship. (It is not necessarily just people on welfare.) Since rents are so high, and often a family's income can not keep up with the cost of living, the government (HUD) will pay for part of the rent, allowing the family to have more money to pay for food and other necessities. A family who applies for Section 8 must meet certain criteria, but this does not mean that they will automatically get a Section, since there is a very long waiting list.

Section 8 is a program under HUD that pays all or a portion of rent for a person who is usually in the "low income/in need of assistance" category. It's assistance that you have to qualify for with your financial situation. It usually has a long waiting list. Your friend is probably telling you to stay away from that particular place due to the location, condition, or neighbors. Section 8 tenants or not, there's good and bad in all different types of housing situations so you might not rule out the place so quickly.

subsidized housing by the government, you don't want to live next to section 8 they are usually collecting welfare and do not care about the appearance if their property because they are given it instead of working for it, they will drive real estate and rental prices down and make the neighborhood unsafe because it is usually a single mother and the father is in Jail. So the kids become troublemakers and ruin the neighborhoods

benadair
Low income housing. Dont move there, I am sure you would regret it.
Section 8 causes property values to go down. I have no problem with it if decent people live there and try to make a better life for themselves and get out of government assisted programs, but some people milk it for all its worth. Welfare is such a diservice! Vote republican!

Section 8 is state assisted housing. They will see how much you make and lower or help supplement your rent. It's like grading on a curve, the less you make, the less they charge, the more help from the state. But the house or apt you are living in has to be pre approved by the section 8 committee.

luv_doesnt_hurt_lies_do
State assisted rentals.
