Alone, I couldn't afford living in a run down roach infested motel that charges weekly rates. Together with my husband, we can afford the rent in middle class mid-ranged price apartment. Getting into one, on the other hand, is really hard when we have some bad debts that apartment companies look at and then decide we are not rent worthy. These bad debts are thanks to the economic crisis giving us some hard times. But we still could afford the rent. It's getting into a place we are having a hard time with. We have to stay with family for the moment...

I always make sure I pay the rent first. We need a shelter to live not the cable,tv,credit cards, internet, cell phone, or the car. Those items are nice but not reqired

Shelter and Food are number 1. I don't care if my credit crashes.

Sorry, but we're good. I was very careful about the type of mortgage we chose. Now we don't have much to spare b/c the price of gas and food is so high, but it's not due to my housing situation. The economy and the price of the dollar just suck right now.

Nebraska Born and Raised
Nope, we're still making triple payments on our mortgage because we bought within our means.

Big Bird
Unlike so many who overextend themselves in order to have what others perceive as success, I am perfectly able to afford my lifestyle. My husband is layed off currently, and although this means fewer extras, it will not put us on the street. It is a matter of priorities. And also, I live in Canada, where jobs are still plentiful.

La Vie Boheme
I was having trouble about 6 months ago but all is pretty good now. Having a budget really helps. I pay more than the minimum on my mortgage and am getting rid of credit card debt as I type. The simple solution is to spend less.

E-vangelist
I'm able to pay mine because I knew how much I could afford and didn't listen to the real estate agent who tried to get us into more house than we needed. One thing I don't like is the value of my 401K. I moved most of it to Bonds but that part that was still in the stock market is in terrible shape. I hope the DOW goes back up soon.

I can pay mine, at least for a while, but the military moved me, so I had to leave my wife and son in Alaska to sell a house. I get money from the military, but with no one able to sell a house, I have to live somewhere temporarily (and pay for that), because as soon as I move my family, I have to pay for 2 places, no choice. That means, I'll have to take out 1500 dollars a month for a 1 1/2 year old house in Alaska that I can't sell, and can't live in. So hard times are coming, I can manage for now, and for a while, but how long can the average American pull out that much money every month? This sucks..............

Bags
Despite what the media says, the company I work for has been busy, busy, BUSY! We have not shut down for a single weekend (due to lack of work) for about 4 years. We have recently broke ground for a new building to make room for more equipment, and are in the process of hiring 20 new employees. I average 48 hours a week minimum and so far this year have 268 hours of overtime. I assure you, very little of that overtime was voluntary. As far as I'm concerned the economy is as strong as ever. So to answer your question; no, I have no problems making my mortgage payment.

Edit: Thank you Jessica H. I'm glad I'm not the only who who feels it's important to live with your means. My college student wife and I have NO credit card debt. That means we own what we have. There is good debt and bad debt. Car payment and mortgage are examples of good debt. Credit card debt is bad debt because in many cases you are paying for stuff you don't even have anymore. I've heard statistics that say; for each dollar the average American earns, they spend $1.10. Come on people, cut up your credit cards and start living within your means!

Edit: Thank you for the "thumbs down" to whomever gave that to me. I guess somebody is jealous because I can make my house payment.
