Sharing a 2 Bedroom apartment with 3 people. What is fair rent ?
I will be moving into a 2 bedroom apartment with my best friend and her boyfriend, They will have one bedroom I will have the other. We have all agreed to work out something with the rent, I dont think its fair for me to pay half when there are 3 people but I also dont think its fair for me to be paying cheap rent because they are sharing a room together. What do you think would be the best ? If our rent only is $1000 and we will split the utilities 3 ways. What would be fair for me to pay and to ask them to pay ?

Thank you

Do they have their own bathroom? If they do I would split it in thirds. Otherwise maybe a 60/40

Splitting it three ways is the fair way to go. Even though the two of them don't have their own rooms like you do. The fact is, there will be three people in that apartment. Each will be using the kitchen, bathrooms, and living space. Plus, I'm sure you'll be sacrificing a little in order to give them their privacy at times. So, living with a couple, you have to give a little bit. Like if they want some alone time hanging out in the living room for a movie, or a romantic dinner at home, that pretty much leaves you stuck in your room or out of the apartment. So, it's only fair that you pay per person, instead of per room. I think if you decide to have a bigger share, it shouldn't be over $100.

I think you should pay 333, and the couple, one pays 333 and the other 334! That's the way I did it when I had a flat with a couple!

You could split the rent 3 ways that would make it fair for all of you. Now paying the bills they should have to put more money on them than you. They will be using more than you. I have been there and done that. Good luck

60-40 all else being equal

You should pay half of the rent and only 1/3rd of the utilities. This is assuming each of the bedrooms are of equal size.

If they have a bigger bedroom, they should pay more rent.

Good luck.

I was in this position with my husband and I and then a roomate. My husband and I paid 2/3 of the rent and she paid the other 1/3. This was the easiest way for us so that way everyone was equal. I don't see it as you paying cheap rent. I see it as everyone doing their part. If you feel like paying 33% is not fair, try a 60-40 deal. You pay 400 and they pay 600. That way you're not paying 1/2 but you're still paying a little more than 1/3. Good luck!

Wouldn't they still be using just 1 bedroom whether you were there or not?

I think a 3rd is fair, you are splitting other bills evenly, so that seems fair to me, they would be sharing that room, even if you werent there, so thats not really an issue, other than the loss of a guest room, or storage area. Id offer around 300.00.

barack obama
i think u people should pay half half

Maldavi
Go 50/50 on the rent, split the utilities 3 ways, and have them buy you dinner once a week.

I think you should make it a 3-some and share the bed with them, then only pay 1/4 rent and have fantasy boom-boom each night.
