Sharing an apartment with a couple - how should the bills be split?
I recently moved in to a 2 bedroom apartment and am sharing with a couple. How should the bills be split? They say I should pay half but I would think for the bills they should be split 3 ways as there are 3 people - what is the correct thing to do?
Thank you
Additional Details
Just to clarify - I moved in at very short notice as I came over to Oz from another country and was desperate to find somewhere nice asap. When they said the bills would be split I (stupidly) assumed it would be 3 ways as I have previously lived with a couple, in a different country and it was split per person not per room!!

split the bills three ways, just because they share a room doesn't mean that they are 1 person. It's not fair for you to have to pay half.

3 people, 3 ways.

If they protest, perhaps you could split the rent in half and the utilities in thirds. That should squash any debate.

Anamia
it depends.
if they both have a job and pay other bills, it should be 3 ways.
if one was always the sole provider, 2 ways.

curmudgeon
thirds would be fair, but you should have settled that BEFORE you moved in.

avendale_13
my husband and i had a roommate for a while too.it should be split for every income in the house. they should each pay their third. you are not using half of every utility in the house, you are only using a third. you shouldn't have to pay the same for yourself as they are paying for two people. I've had lots of roommates over the years. that's just the rules. split it evenly.

Flying High
3 ways. If you pay for half, 1 person is living for free.

The correct thing to do is live alone or get married and share everything with your spouce equally.

Things not being equal, and knowing the reality of our new (cramped) world...I would say it pays to sit down and discuss the way bills should be split.

Realize that there are other matters that may affect this relationship, so if all parties were candid and discussed the details openly, then maybe you can all live in harmony until better arrangements come your way.

I would vote for all bodies sharing equally in everything.

Any other way would make you odd man out and being made a fool of.

Well my husband and I did this for a while. I advise you to move out and get your own place. Alot of drama took place. He got a girlfriend she moved in and refused to help pay anything. My husband and I were paying 2/3 of everything. So be prepared for drama even if you guys are awesome friends.

This should of been decided before you moved in. Well now that this is all said it should be thirds. Everyone is using everything equally.

frissy
I think you should get your own apartment.

Living with a couple just never works out. Your question pretty much makes that evident.

And I can't believe that you moved in BEFORE deciding how to split the bills. That was really not a very well thought out plan.

ETA: All of you saying "They are using 2/3 of the electricity" have NO WAY of knowing that. It could be that the OP leaves his radio on all day in his bedroom, and the couple are always out. Or it could be that they ALL THREE watch television together - who pays for that electricity?!

One half of a one bedroom apartment = 1/2 the rent!
