Should I ask my landlord or not...?
Okay, so 3 weeks ago I had a family emergency & i had to fly to NJ to be with my dad, I stayed there for about 2 weeks. Well since i had been out of work for that long my paycheck is pretty crappy looking. I have to pay my rent by the 1st, its $450 & i only have $370.

Do you think my landlord will be understanding to this? I will need a couple of more days to come up with the other $80. I've only been renting from him for about 2 months now, so I really haven't gotten a feel for him yet...he seems pretty nice & understanding, but i duno?! Would you ask for an extention, i would totally pay a late fee!!!
Additional Details
And for the 2 months i've been renting I haven't caused any problems, and he's been getting my rent on time...

All you really need to do is go to him and say "As you know, I had a family problem and missed two weeks of work. I have $370.00 right now for the rent. I can pay you the balance on _______. Will that be ok?"

The one thing landlords hate more than not getting paid is avoidance. If you go straight to them and tell them what is going on, make an arrangement and then keep your word, you shouldn't have any problem at all.

If there is no late fee in your lease, then you don't owe one.

Do talk to the landlord, and do tell him what you can offer, like paying in parts to make it up. or you'll pay the outstanding on this date. Cause face it or not, you just arent going to have the money. Im sure he'd be appreciative of you telling him rather than not paying the rent.

explain the situation without giving a sob story and ask for an extension

I understand your situation---but as a landlord my-self this would make me wonder if you are going to have a hard time in the future paying rent. You have only been their two months--which is really no time.I gueess you have no choice but to give him what you have and promise the balance before the late date. Check your lease to see how much grace time you have before the late charges go into effect.

Chaosman
Skipping rent after only 2 months? I'd be pretty pissed if one of my tenants did that. Honest truth.

Trouble
Yes, ask or communicate with the landlord.

2 months is not much time in regards to having proved yourself to the landlord. You have not gotten a feel for him, therefore he has not gotten a feel for you - the tenancy is still very new.

If the landlord knows of the situation, talk to him immediately. Promise to pay by a specific date and pay in full by the promised date (including late fees) - do not make promises that you cannot keep.

Best thing is be up front with him, pay him the $370 on time and pay the other $80 when you get it.

I would plead for him to waive late fee if he wants to assess one.

What does your lease say about late payments?
Do you get a grace period before the landlord takes action?
Why aren't you borrowing the $80 from a friend, work, or credit to pay the landlord?

The last comment that you said is EXACTLY what the landlord should hear if you are unwilling to borrow the money and pay the landlord in full.
Here is $370, I will pay $120 (the balance plus late fees) on February 5th.

It is very considerate that you are thinking ahead about this. I am a landlord; you will be fine!

If you've got a good track record so far, that's in your favor.

In your shoes, I'd immediately go to him (even a day early is better) and pay him all that you have available and make a promise that you know you can keep about the balance.

Whatever you do, don't make a promise you're unsure about. If you know you can come up with half in 5 days tell him that and do it, rather than making some vague promise and then have to drag it out.

Offer to pay a penalty for the delay, he might not even want it, but if you make the offer, it's better than if he has to impose it. Making the offer, makes it seem that you understand that he, too, has obligations and that you are compensating him for the inconvenience that your problems are causing him.
