paintmeblue719 | Should I be angry at my landlord for coming in and cleaning my apartment while I was out of town? |
My landlord knew I was out of town for a week, and that my boyfriend was watching my cat. She called me and told me that she'd gone into the apartment to check the cat (I didn't ask her to) because the cat was crying. What she didn't tell me was that she'd cleaned the litterbox and taken out the trash in my bathroom while she was here. I know she snooped around a bit, too (all she found was a drawer full of 'toys'. She got more then she bargined for!). The litterbox hadn't been cleaned in a week, so i'm sure it stunk, and it is possible that a neighbor complained or you could smell it from the hallway. Anyway- should I be angry that she snooped, or amused that she cleaned my bathroom? Additional Details I never asked my boyfriend to do it- i was only supposed to be gone for a weekend, not a week, and his cat is an outdoor cat, so he never has to deal with a box. He probally didn't think of it, and I'm not mad at him for it. |

umm that sounds REALLY wierd.....
but if she only DID go to the bathroom, then I wouldn't make a big deal of it. |

I actually encountered a similar issue a few years ago. My lanlord came in while we were out of town, noticed we had left some dishes in the sink and almost yelled at us for it! I was very upset with him. The thing is, since they own the property, they have the right to enter pretty much whenever they feel the need to.
Now, that being said I would be more concerned with her snooping through your things. It's just unacceptable and you are entitled to your privacy. I guess your feelings will depend on your relationship with your lanlord. It was creepy to my boyfriend and I (god knows how many times he was in our apartment?)....we moved out a month later. Good luck! |

I would say check your lease to see about landlord entry. Normally, the landlord must advise you when they have to enter your apartment or allow you to be there such as times when you may need repairs. Maybe you can also check with your local landlord-tenant association for the specific laws. |

she maybe your landlady but by law your place is rented to you. she is not allowed in that property without permission and is breaking and entering. in the eyes of the law she is trespassing and is classed as a burgular as she did not have your permission to enter the property. you can have her arrested. that is your property until the last day of your tenancy and then it is hers. until then no one is allowed without your permission |

You should be thankful, and also try not to make a big deal of it. It sounds like she was genuinely concerned about your cat--- it's really kind of cruel to not clean the litter for a week and I wouldn't be surprised if your poor cat was crossing his legs for 3 days because the litter was too gross to pee in! So she was doing something nice for you.
As for the snooping, it's not right that she did that but it's human nature to be nosy, so maybe put a lock on the toy drawer or take the cat to a kennel next time so there's no crying cat, hence no reason to enter the apartment and no temptation to snoop. |

You should tell your landlord that you felt that her entry to your apartment without prior notice made you feel slightly uncomfortable and as though it was an invasion of your privacy (if that is what you feel) and that you'd appreciate if she asked before she went into your house without reason.
My landlord has gone into my place before to let the plumber in and even took my dog for a walk while he was there. I totally didn't mind...mainly because my landlord is a badass...and I know he wasn't snooping...just being a good landlord. If he had been going though my fridge, I might have said something. |

If your boyfriend did not clean the box, dump him.
You also need to get a better brand of cat litter. Tidy Cat Crystals seems to be the best. Solid clumps, and no odor.
Let it go this time, as your BF did not do what he should have. |

On your lease does your landlord have the right to enter your apartment? Even if you see that it does they must give you proper notice. If you said it was OK for her to enter your apartment to check on the cat then she is not doing anything unlawful. You should tell her in writing (keeping a copy for yourself) that you were very surprised to find she did more than check on you cat and you did not authorize her to do this. Tell her it made you feel uncomfortable and in the future you would rather she did not enter your apartment. If your lease says she can enter there are restrictions including giving the tenant notice including why she needs to enter. Look these up on your lease. If she does something beyond what she said she was going to do that is not right. |

Yes!! First of all they have to give you reasonable notice to gain access to your space, and they absolutley do not have the right to "clean" while your belongings are there and you are not. I would contact an attorney right away if this happened to me and see if what my rights are. They have invaded your privacy, and your rights. Also, going to a local media outlet and telling them your story as human interest may shake things up a bit. Good Luck!! |
