Should I become a real estate agent?
Ok, I just want some honest answers here, because I don't know much about the life of an agent. I am a young female college student with an associates degree in liberal arts. I am currently attending a university part-time, majoring in education. I would like a somewhat stable job to help my husband pay the bills, but it's not necessary, and he always tells me to just focus on school, and not to work. But I feel like I need to do SOMETHING. I also have a 1 yr old daughter, but she is in daycare M-F 7am-6pm. Would being a real estate agent work for me if I switched all my classes to night/online classes? Will having a child interfere with my success as an agent? I am a very ambitious "people person" with the drive to be successful in anything I put my mind to, and I know that when you begin as an agent, that you won't be banking right off the bat. I just don't want to set myself up into a situation that is impossible to maintain. so, any input would be great! thanks :)

focus on school, so then you can get a really good job to help with paying the bills.

As long as you make it your career then definately dive in head first. If you can learn how to sell houses in this market you will be poised to make a small fortune the next time the housing market booms. You are in an excellent position because your husband can support your family on his income. If you don't intend on staying longterm then I suggest that you not do it at all. I think being a real estate agent is like a long term investment and pays off if you stay in for the long haul.

To make money you need money. That being said Real Estate isnt a good place to be to supplement income or for spending money. First, people looking for houses do not want a part time agent. They want someone that is current with the market and market changes and has experience in all fields of the market ie.... new home sales, REO's, HUD homes etc....
Can it be done part time?? yes, but the learning process or expanding your knowledge must be full time. I obtained my license almost two years ago when I was Active Duty Air Force(full time job) after gaining experience, SOI (sphere of influence) and just being comfortable with my knowledge I retired and as of Nov 09 I have been practicing real estate full time.
I would recommend that if you are going to dive into this start working with someone that is in the buisness already and willing to train you or teach you. In real estate there are several ways to make money. One way is a referral. If you are a liscensed agent and refer a client to another agent you can typically earn a 25% referral. In otherwards you have a friend that is looking for a house, you are too busy to show houses or take care of him in a professional manner becuase you are not yet fully trained. You can refer him to another agent that you know and when he closes the transaction with your friend you get 25% for a referral. Meanwhile you can tag along through the whole process gaining experience.

good luck
