Should I build a Pool?
So, I am buying a house and I am currently in mid escrow. I insist I have a Jacuzzi but I have been going back and forth on the idea of having a pool and spa built instead of just getting an above ground hot tub. I’m paying $270,000 for the home that is three bedrooms, two bathrooms and is located in central Phoenix Arizona. Other homes in the area are selling at similar prices. Most of the homes in the area do not have pools. If I where to build a pool it would be heated and self cleaning with an attached spa and cost about $35,000. Do you think it would be a good choice to build a pool or should I just stay with an above ground hot tub?

In the long run you will save money. But know that there are a lot of yearly cost in keeping up a pool chemical alone cost alot. Great choice with the heater and self cleaner thats what we have and wouldn't have it any other way.

Pools are quite an expense, and also need maintenance. From things i have read on real estate they also do not add to the selling factor. In other words they don't increase the property value. There are also things to worry about such as if small children are around, and also some pets and animals. I would do some research on it before you make a decision.

If you like to swim go for it, pools are great and good for you. It's good exercise, good for parties and barbecues, or just sitting by in the evening with a cool beverage.

with the real estate market how it is it would definitely help if you were looking to resell. plus pools are great, especially in phoenix.

Building a pool will always add value to your home. They are not cheap to maintain, and being in Arizona you don't have an off-season, you'll be running it all year. If you are most concerned about added value, inquire with your agent. Do keep in mind that you will be spending around $1000 a year to maintain the pool, not including any replacement parts for equipment.

You can always build the pool later without incurring much difference in cost.

$270K huh. That wouldn't buy a two bedroom fixer-up starter within 50 miles of Boston. You don't know how lucky you are.

idk you can use the hot tub year round at least but pools are kewl i think a hot tub would get old personallyh

Pools are iffy. I have one but most people don't look for a house with a pool. Many avoid a house because of a pool.

I would stick with a nice hot tub. It will get alot more use than a pool. (Unless you have kids)

Honey, do you even have to ask? If you've got the money, go for it!

When you go to sell a home with a pool, you do not get your money back on it. But if you wanna live there forever (or don't care to lose money when you sale), get one if you want one

BTW, Where I live, a 3 bdrm/2 bath home brand new goes for about $150,000-$190,000 depending on squarefootage...

k2koolbchgrl
i think it sounds great. and 5 or so years later when you want to sell it, people will buy your house instead of your neighbors because they dont have a pool.

it sounds great.

I live in AZ and I can tell you you are not getting what you want for $35k. I had a bunch of estimates done this past spring for a self cleaning play pool, pebble sheen and kool deck. The lowest estimate I got was $41k and it wasn't even really what I wanted. If you can afford it, get what you know you'll use most. Don't base it on what other homes have. I'm glad I didn't spend the $$ on the pool...we're getting out of this place. Can't wait! But good luck to ya!

If it were me and I had the money, you bet! I see the pool more for exercise and over all benefit. Also the fact that you live in Phoenix, I would still have a pool. However you will have to do what is right for you. I have a hot tub, but I go to swim at a hotel. I don't have that option to have a pool since it floods but this has been a dry year. lol

I think you can get way more bang for your buck in SE Texas. Arizona is too hot and two bathrooms, don't cut it, so why waste 35,000 to have a pool at a fairly crummy house. ???? seriously.
