Should I tell them about the body? No joke!?
My live-in boyfriend and I are getting ready to put our house on the market. I have lived in this house for 10 years, and Josh moved in about 5 years ago. At about the same time that Josh moved in, a repairman was checking out the crawl space under the house when he found a dead body. It was very old, and I had never detected an odd smell, so we never noticed it. My question is when we put the house up for sale, should we mention this? It seems like old history to me, but Josh is superstitious and thinks the house may be haunted, so we should tell them. Should we?

Thanks a bunch

We did tell the police. They removed the body and as far as I know, no one ever claimed it.

If someone dies of natural causes or commits sucide in the home, you don't have to disclose this....However, if someone is murdered, you will have to disclose it....But how would you know if they were murdered? What did the police say?

QandA
you should ask your realtor about it. Some states have laws requiring sellers to disclose all information about stuff like that. Especially if there was a murder or suicide in the house or if the house was lived in by someone notorious. If you don't have to disclose the information then I wouldn't. But I'm not superstitious either

I wouldn't .as long as no one was murdered or killed themselves it's not important...it was an old body and probably had been there for many 'many years...it would just spook the buyers and as long as it doesn;t interfere with the house ;don;t say a thing' unless they ask' but they probably won;t....good luck

In CA legally speaking you have to disclose to the buyers exactly what you know because if they find out later on they can sue you and rightfully so. As a buyer I want to know and be able to decide based on the information I have.

Don't tell anybody if you actually intend to sell it. The cops know about it and that's "all the people need to know".
Did you ever ask Josh about the strange coincidence that the body appeared about the same time he moved in?

You better check the laws because I think ( at least in some states) you have to disclose that kind of information. If a person buys your house and finds out that there was a body under it they might be able to sue you. So it would probably be a good idea to let a real estate agent handle that so you can be sure the proper paper work is filled out to prevent that sort of mishap.

If you do tell your house is never going to sell, better to keep quiet and ignore the whole matter. You are not required to disclose this information by law. Good luck.

smiling_freds_biz_info
Historical matters are best left there. Unless someone asks , there is no need to go there.

I'd wait till you make the sale! Who would buy A house knowing that! Is it haunted? You've lived there long enough to know ! The new buyers should know because what if they found something to help determine what happened and to whom, but defindently after the sale! Good Luck with that!

in most states it is not a requirement- however, if you are asked (if) then you MUST disclose it.As for superstitious why not have the local priest come in and bless the house, this should take care of Josh's concerns.

CozyMolli
if they dont ask... then is it necessary to tell? Would you wanna know? It may make it harder to sell the house...

no u shouldnt tell them cuz they will think its haunted

I see no need to offer that information unless prospective buyers ask about it for some reason.

itsjustfoolishness
I wouldn't. Legally you wouldn't have to and I'm pretty sure it would take away from the appeal.
