Should a roommate that has a boyfriend move in for a period of time pay more of the rent and bills?
I have lived with this roommate for almost 2 years now. She has a boyfriend that just moved back from California and needed some where to stary while he looked for an apartment. Me being the nice person that i am sad that it was fine thinking that he would be here for a couple of days a week at the most. He has now been here for almost a month. I don't see that i should have to pay the for the increase of the bills. I have told my roommate that she needs to pay for 2/3rds of the bills because he has been here living using all the utilities. She said that his answer to that was that he only sleeps here. I made sure to let he know that he is not just sleeping here since he has moved all his cloths here. Takes showers here, washes his cloths, buys his groceries and keeps them here, and ect. So should he pay for his part or should i have to absorb him in to my finances?

Tell your roommate that her boyfriend OR her is going to have to PAY for his 1/3 of the apartment expenses ..it is only FAIR !

Why should you pay for her boyfriend ; that does not make any sense ....

estielmo
Tell her he pays 1/3 or you will report the unauthorized resident to the apartment manager.

Tomorrow give her a check for only 1/3 of the rent and utilities.

Lack of an increase in cost is NOT the point. The point is he is now 1/3 of the household.

stand your ground - he should be paying 1/3 of all utilities that he is living here. if he does not agree, he needs to move out because this is not fair to you.

she should be (or he) paying more on the utilities...he can't live for free and take advantage of others.

Classy Granny
If he is sleeping in her room no need to a rent increase, but utilities and other expenses should be split 3 ways.

READ your lease. It probably violates the lease to bring another person into apartment. Certainly if some one is there for more than two weeks, they need to pay for 2/3s of the bills.

If you can look at utilities over last 6 months and show how much utilities have increased, she should see reason. Why does she think that having two of them there doesn't change anything???

ok 2/3 may be extreme. Look at last month utility bills and if there is an increase then adjust from last month as that is fair

Then the loser needs to see him self in the light if he only sleeps there then he needs to be gone all day looking for work or go stay in a hostel be his own Man, not leach off of young women trying to get their life's in order.

He needs to put out or get out she dosent like then you need a new roommate !! oh besides that you all can get evicted his not on the lease. So he needs to pay to for his part of being on the lease, backgraound check, and the rest, of what ever you had to do to get in to your apt .

La Vie Boheme
A month? He should or "they" should be paying 2/3 of the rent and extra on any utilities he uses.

In principle, I think he should pay for utilities. However, in reality, I think if you check your utility bills, you won't see much of an increase.

He needs to start paying for a third of the costs. Of course he "just sleeps there..." That's why people rent homes, so they have a place to sleep!
At the very least, he's flushing the toilets, brushing his teeth, taking drinks from the fridge, dirtying glasses that will need to be washed... and I'm sure he's not doing this in the dark. It adds up fast and it sounds like he's there a lot more than that.

If he doesn't turn on the dishwasher, that doesn't mean he's not using it... it just means that he's not cleaning up after himself.

As for the rent, divide the total square footage by the total rent to get the cost per square foot. Divide the cost of the common area by three ([area x cost per square foot] / 3). Add 1/3 of the common area to your bedroom rent (in their case it's 1/3 common area + 1/2 of her bedroom, each). To check the math, add the individual rents up to be sure it equals the total rent.

Sounds like it's time for a house meeting. Tell them that you were not aware that he would be staying there for a month. A guest stays less than two weeks, a roommate stays for more than two weeks. Beginning this month, he is an unofficial roommate and is hereby responsible for 1/3 of the apartment costs. It's fair to split the common area three ways, because look at the fridge, for example: he's keeping food there and you now have less space. If you turn on a light, and he's in the room, he's still using that electricity. He's still enjoying the a/c. Mention everything you said before to them: showers, groceries (and dishes/dish soap, electricity to run the dish machine and for cooking, sponges, trash bags, paper towels). Draw up an ammended "lease" between the roommates, agreeing to the costs and length of time he can stay. If he isn't cool with this, he has two weeks to move out.

Do not absorb him into your finances. And don't be afraid to pull out your official lease and show it to your friend, pointing out the part that says you can't have people living there who aren't on the lease.
