Should council house tenants be able to buy their houses at a discount price?
I just wondered if people think it is fair. My husband and myself pay about £800 a month on our mortgage, my parents had to put their names on the mortgage so that we could afford the house. Now I have since found out that If we had apllied for a council house we would have paid a tiny fraction on that price for rent (we have a daughter) and would have been able to buy the house for 30% of its value a few years down the line. Now I know that people will say you are paying for the location and quite often council areas are not nice ( not aways though I know some lovely council areas) but even if that were the case I am sure we would have stuck it out knowing that we would have a big house (because council houses are nearly always quite roomy) for a fraction of the cost of buying privatly.
Why and how is that fair? I understand that the council needs to help those in need, but why allow them to buy it when so many have no way of getting on the property ladder the proper way?

no why should they//certainly buy the house but at market price or the couples who did it the other way have a right to feel they have been left out

I know this is an unpopular view (especially with people in council houses....) but I don't think anyone should be given a council house.

Why would someone need one?

We're all born equal - I worked hard at school, got good qualifications, a good job, and bought a house. Whereas I could have flunked school, not got a job, knocked up some Kappa slapper and we'd have got a council house... The worst I heard was two young (16-17) year olds talking to each other, one was saying if they have another kid, they'll get upgraded from a council flat to a council house.

It's too easy in this country for people to get something for nothing while other people pay for their mistakes - good on you for paying your mortgage legitimately :)

I think it is unfair, if they build more council houses to replace the ones sold, it would not be so bad but they do not, hence the high level of homeless people and people living in cramp conditions!

Thatchers government brought in this ability or Right To Buy your council home.

The system was completely floored because 'profits' from the sales (of houses built using tax payers money) could not be used to replace the sold houses with new ones as necessary.

So all the nicest best houses, were sold off, whilst all the poorer houses remain rented.

Councils are restricted and cannot build new properties to replace those sold off!

The discounts that purchasers benefit from are worthwhile, up to 33%, often £40,000 in todays market. Often calculating to up to £26 per week since the tenancy had began.

Some council housing is now in a poor state with lack of investment and repair. Many homes were built with a 25 year lifespan in mind.

Lots of councils are now transferring to a private charitable organistations whereby the government pays off debts and allows borrowing to improve housing stock and improve old council estates with huge invested profits increasing the rents.

discounts are calculated by the amount of years you have been a council tenant. if you have been a tenant for a long time you have taken care of the house and paid a lot of rent. i think the right to buy is a good idea, but i also believe more help should be given to first time buyers as house prices are extortionate

yes as they can only do it after a long time paying rent so yes i think they should be able to

I feel the same about the property ladder it is very hard to get on we pay 1,200 Euros a month for our mortgage and it is not a big house. We also have three kids. But if you have of applied for a council house you would probably still be waiting but yes I do think it is fair as a lot of them have payed rent on there house for years so have probably almost payed for it buy now any way and they only get of according to points that they have. so yes I do find it fair and this from some one that is struggling to pay a mortgage.

"MUD" is correct with Thatchers "Right to buy Policy", if the money from the sales had been allowed to be used to replace the sold housing stock then, I believe, we all wouldn`t be paying so much in council tax. Many council houses are larger than the average new build because there was a boom in council house building in the 50`s, the drive in housing was led by personal space around the home. Today's new "council" houses are built by property developers with the view to maximum profit.

Whilst I can sympathise with your point of view, what you seem to be missing is that council house tenants are unlike private tenants in as much as 1) they cannot afford a mortgage or private rented accommodation and 2) when you move into a council house it is unlike moving into a private rented house as you will likely live there for a considerable amount of time unlike private rents which are on a year to year basis normally. Can you imagine living in your home for 10 years completely settled, raising your children but never being able to call it your own? The people around me have bought their houses after living in them for years. I may never be able to afford to buy my own home, much as I'd like to. The one major change I would make though is that if someone bought their council house with a discount then they should be made to wait a lengthier time to be able to sell it this would discourage the people who can afford to buy a private property from making a profit out of social housing

Councils should not be allowed to sell there houses at any price. There is a national shortage of social housing as the availability is at a chronically low level.

I dont agree with it. It was OK years ago but nowadays the houses are being bought for a fraction of the price then sold for a large profit.
Many people are on long waiting lists for council houses because they are unable to afford private rents or to buy and with the council selling off houses, there are fewer houses available for those who really need them.

No , as the council houses were brought with public money

The councils sell the houses but do they give the money back to the tax payer , no

Selling council houses at a discount saves you - you personally - money. The discount is a lot less than the gap between rents and maintenance costs. By getting shut of housing costs, the councils keep the council tax from yet another rise.

The commentator who suggests that the policy failed because councils could not build more houses is barking up the wrong tree. Councils do not want to build more houses; even Labour councils did not truly want this burden when the right to buy was introduced. A housing department is a millstone round their necks. The right to buy, in exchange for potential capital gain, shifted the financial burden of maintenance to the householder. No one is compelled to buy - so, socially and financially, the policy has been a marvellous success.

Unlike the houses in council ownership, hardly any privately-owned ones are boarded up and unoccupied, so it has been a success, too, in terms of maximising the number of homes in occupation. Without it, there would have been many more homeless.

You have benefited from these sales. Not as much as the people who bought, true, but still you are better off.

i don't think you should be able to buy your council house, because nowadays, thanks to that many people buying them in the late 80's, early 90's, there are older people rattling about in massive 3 bed houses with no family to visit them, while there are young families, 2 parents 3 children cooped up in rubbish 2 bed flats with no room to move!! Grr....makes me really mad!!
