Lobbert | Should i rent a house that has no central heating? |
i am house hunting at the mo and have found a really nice, 2 bed end of terrace.
the house is fairly big an has lots of character.
the only problem is....its got no central heating!!!
it has storage heaters in all the rooms.
will this make the house freezing in the winter, and will it cost a fortune.
shall i just not bother with this house.
oh and the rent is £650 pcm - its in leeds |

Storage Heating is no more costly than gas / electric central heating if used correctly. Energy prices are at a premium at the minute and gas charges especially are very high.
I don't see you having a problem, try making sure you fit low energy light bulbs, turn appliances off after using them (never leave things on standby), fit draught excluders and ask your landlord for the Energy performance certificate (by law he has to have one). This will show the strengths, weaknesses and recommendations to improve energy usage. |

if its economy 7 heating thats not so bad. the heaters heat up overnight (when its cheap) and release the heat during the day. that does mean though that by evening they are only warm and not hot. most of the heat having gone during the day. they are also not as controlable as central heating if you need more one evening.
If you just have fan heaters on the walls, you have the ability to have heat when you need it but once you turn them off the heat seems to disapear quickly. your also left having to turn them on and off manually.
central heating is automatic, you can programme when you want them on or off and the heat seems to stick around for a while after you have turned the heating off.
price wise, i guess it depends on how much you will be using, how long will you be staying in this house. i will admit though. central heating is a luxury most people wouldnt do without |

If the rent is a lot lower than for a similar property with central heating then it might be worth it if not then no |

A big house with no central heating is a big problem! I personally wouldn't go for it...especially at that price! I'm only paying £475 for a huge ground floor, two bed, victorian flat with it's own garden and entrance...with central heating. Though, granted, it's in Scarborough..so hardly a city like Leeds...lol |

No central heating - I personally wouldn't bother, but that is down to me not knowing how effective storage heaters are. |
|

Well i Never!
|
i really wouldnt - even with heating you would struggle to keep it constantly warm. Storage heaters are renound at eating electric and cost a small fortune- keep scouting the market am sure you would get a better deal |

Granted storage heaters are pretty bad, but I rent a house with them, and it isn't so bad if you adapt.
Buy lined curtains, keep doors shut, make sure the house is properly insulated and draught proofed. If the house has double glazing, you'll be better off than I am!
If you're worried about winter bills, do what I do and pay by direct debit, so it's pretty much a flat rate all through the year.
Also, the modern storage heaters are far better than the old type ones.
But overall, if you're not 100% sure and happy about the house, don't take it. |

Tough call. I'm lucky in that the house I rent has thermostats on the radiators individually.
The advantages of not having central heating is simple. You will only put the heaters in the rooms you're using thus saving you money.
The disadvantages of course are that storage heaters aren't as good at heating in either time or heated area.
I know this probably hasn't helped but it might help you to decide if you can live with these advantages / disadvantages. |

Well if I was going to rent a house with no central heating I would be asking for a reduction in the rent. You can always buy space heaters and to be honest these houses in the U.K. are freezing - with or with out the heating in the winter time. |
