JBR | Should landlords be required to put peep holes in all of their tenants' doors? |
I realize it's not a law, but whenever someone comes to my door, I cannot tell who it is unless I open the door. I don't like to open the door unless I know who it is, so I just don't open it. Do you think it should be a requirement for safety? Additional Details I live in an unsavory area of town, and it's a townhouse, so anyone can just walk up to my door. If it was a secured building I wouldn't care as much. |

If the landlord will not install a peep hole, you can still protect yourself with a chain lock. It allows you to open the door part way without letting the person in. Your landlord should be willing to install this for you, or it might be worth doing yourself with permission. |

Can you not look out a window to see who it is??
You could always try yelling "Who is it??" really loud. That tends to work. If the person says they are there to kill you.......don't answer the door.
If it makes you feel better, ask if you can put one it, but don't alter the door without the landlord's permission.
Unfortunately, anyone who really wants to get in is going to whether you answer the door or not. |

Not a bad idea but you should do it yourself. The landlord is not obligated to do so unless it's a term in the lease. Make sure you get the landlord's permission before you put it in. |

Having a peep hole could be good and bad, because even though they cannot see well from the outside into the inside they can still see movement. You can ask your landlord to please put a peep hole on your door. What I would do is put some sort of object in front of the peep hole so no one can look in. Tell him you are a young lady and you are afraid of opening the door with out knowing who is at the door. But listen to me, please cover the peep hole from the inside. ok? |

perhaps you could ask your landlord if he would put one in or at least allow you to do so at your won expense. It's worth asking... |

No, landlords shouldn't be required to do so. The tenant should realize what they value in a rental property and make the appropriate choice for them based on cost and amenities. |

In some places it is the law.
In any case, I think it is a very good idea. |

In some states/cities it is a requirement for the LL to provide some way to see visitors without having to open the door...
It's a safety measure.
Many doors are built with a peep hole already installed. |

Why should a landlord be required to put that in??? I think that if you approach it properly and pay to have a professional install the peep hole then the landlord would be nice if he allowed you to put it in at your expense.
I think that often times people think that landlord's should be responsible for their well being. You need to take responsibility for yourself. |
