Should my brother need a cosigner for an apartment just because his fiance's parents say he should?
I received a call from my younger brother asking if I could co-sign for an apartment for him?

Here is the situation:

He is 26 years old. He just came out of the marines last month after a 4 four service. He was accepted to a 4 year university and needs housing. He is transferring in with 44 credits, the university only has dorms for freshmen.

He has been dating a 22 year student there for four years. They have been engaged for 1 year (she has a 4000 diamond engagement ring). She has an apartment on campus, and her roommate has moved out. She needs a new roommate so they figured why not have him sign onto the lease, move in and kill two birds with one stone.

Her parents have been throwing every objection they can at this. They co-signed for her for the apartment two years ago.

He is 26 years old. Has guaranteed income coming in while in college from the VA to cover. Has well established credit from car leases and other loans. The landlord is not requiring it.
Additional Details
Oh and the guy is a stand up individual. Not shady or anything.

Sounds like he shouldn't need a co-signer

It is the landlords decision and choice to ask for a co-signer or not.

The opinion of this girl's parents doesn't figure into anything as they are not the landlord.

Everything else you mentioned has nothing to do with the situation at all.

If his credit score is acceptable to the owner/landlord, and they don't require one, then, NO, he doesn't need one.

If the landlord is not requiring it, it is not necessary to co-sign for him to live there. I do not think that he needs a cosigner. His fiance's parents seem to have an issue with the cohabitation -- he should resolve that with them. You do not need to cosign.

if the apartment management is not requiring one then. no he doesn't need one. I think the parents are just worried about their own credit. they should be able to get off the lease if their daughter has been living there for some time now and has established her own rental history with them. don't leases have to be renewed yearly? hmm.... I am sure they can sign a new one without the parents. have your brother and his girl check into that.
good luck

Now AM not to sure? Like can he be trusted because ya know what happens when m + f abode together aim not sure, my advise is to go for it cause you will find out if he is worth Marriage this could be a very good test. its better to find out now then to get married first OK time will tell for sure go for it let him reside with her ya have my 99% approval just think of the money that could be saved?

Then no he doesn't have to. The only reason why the parents are doing that is because. If something happens to the apt then they want him to be responsible for at least half of it, and that he cant just leave her hanging.

But for your brother even if he doesn't sign and they split up then she still has to give him 30 days to leave. Even tho he didn't sign it because. He as been living there. I was told this by some cops. and if he does sign it and they split then he wont have to pay for anything that was messed up after he leaves. If he doesn't then he would have to brake the lease agreement and might have to pay some big bucks. I wouldn't sign it.

Your Property Path
The parents are being controlling and need to leave people to sort out their own affairs....
The owner or manager will require a co-signor only if the financial requirements for the rental are not met.
If the landlord is OK with it, then no co-signor is necessary

Bruta
if the landlord is not requiring co-signer then your brother does NOT need a co-signer.
maybe is best for him to get his own apartment since the in-laws are giving him such hard time about him moving in with their daughter.

they obviously signed for the lease not her. they have every right to object to this if they want too. have your brother get his own apartment.

Way too much information for your question.

If the landlord doesn't require a co-signer...then what are Parent X talking about. I'd tell them to mind their own business.
