Should my rent be less??
I moved into a downstairs duplex studio unit a few months ago. It costs $550.00 a month w/all utilities incl. The first and last months were due in advance. As soon as we moved in our cat got attacked by the landlords dog(lives upstairs unit). It cost me in the end $700 to have her treated. Landlord took off 150$ in rent...Since then I have had thier **** water leaking over my kitchen...Thier AC leaks where my couches should be(needless to say, i had to move stuff around AGAIN) When it rains for a while it seeps through the seam in our house near the floor...which once we lost power to half the house bcuz of the flood leak and have to use extension cords to power anything. Plus the AC down here is not working and its getting hot...Landlord this week asked for $150.00 in advance to get daughter something for bday and rent was due the next day. When my husband only took her $300.00 more $$ she asked for the rest. What should I pay for dealing w/all this?

Your landlord has already cost you more than money. She has cost you emotional distress. As stated by other posters, she is not allowed to ask for rent early. Unless your cat was somehow partially responsible for the attack, your landlord should have covered all vets costs.

You don't say whether you have a lease or rent month to month and you don't sya what state you live in. You need to see what the laws are for repairs in your state. Document in writing all the problems and send it certified to her.

Truthfully, this landlord is not likely to fix anything--might be a good time to cut and run. I would definately pursue her for your out of pocket expenses for you cat though....

.If i were u, i just move out!!

Curious Party
Move. Move. Move. The conditions sound unsanitary and unsafe. The landlord does not have the right to ask for rent in advance. The vet bill should have been handled in small claims court. Take as many pictures and video as you can and get the heck out of there. Make sure to document any conversations you have (even if it means jotting down notes after you have the conversation) and keep all written documentation your landlord provides. Good luck!

Durango
you should move......

Elaine K
You need to ask them to fix the problems or move out. Also, they have absolutely no right to ask you for rent early, even a day early. It sounds like this landlord is struggling for money if she is asking for $150 a day early to get her daughter a present, which leads me to believe that she will not be able to fix the problems in the house.

Bottom line...leaks and water cause mold. Mold is not sanitary. Move out.

yeah your paying way to much then what you should be paying....i pay alot and my house doesnt have no leaks, or anything like that...your getting ripped off!

spadezgurl22
move out theres obv too many problems with these people. not making timely repairs and leaks, and attacks. it is worth living in these conditions and arguing over money. their obv stingy people if they wont pay the medical bills and fix the repairs. MOVE OUT ! ITS ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE!

You need to move, forget about rental discounts.

It sounds like you live in a very unprofessionaly managed building. With all the leaking going on and a dangerous animal you need to just leave. You could sue in small claims for the WHOLE vet bill. It is not related to your rent. Rent is due on rent due day only. I wouldnt live there for one second from what you have described. Take videos or pics of the leaking and break the lease and move out. You are incurring damages due to your landlords negligence. lawyer time.

Your landlord should fix the things that are wrong. You shouldn't have to put up with leaks. What does your landlord say when you ask him/her to fix the leaks? If you can't get them fixed then see if there is a group in your area that helps tenants whose landlords won't fix things. There's a group where I live that always advertised on the public access cable channel.

DennistheMenace
The landlords finances seem shakey, if he has to borrow to buy a present.....going to court to try and get him to fix things wont work, because theyll just give him more time to fix it. With limited funds that wont happen....if your month-to-month, give the 30 day notice, and cut your loss now, and move..........oh and Id ask around town about that last months rent. Most places have eliminated that, unless they set-up a savings acct. which you collect the interest.............
