Scarlet Element | Should people change the locks if they buy a new home? |
We have just brought a new house recently and I took it for granted that we would get new locks put on the front and back doors so I got a few quotes.
Now my husband tells me we are not getting it done because it is unnecessary.
He says we should trust the previous owner that nobody else has keys or could access the property (and all our stuff!) while we are out.
My husband accused me tonight of having an obsessive compulsive disorder because I am security/safety conscious and would prefer to know ONLY we have the keys.
Hubby says he will just ask the previous owner and he will know if the owner is lying to him about the possibility of other keys being around. I said I still would like new locks. Hubby says I should trust his judgement because he will know if the owner is lying. Now hubby says I don't trust or respect his judgement. :(
What do most people do when they move house? Am I too paranoid or just being sensible? |

My boyfriend and I are going to be moving into a house soon and changing the locks is one of the first things I want to do...
It's not just the previous owners that could have keys, but also the realtors...the way the world is today, you can never be too safe... |

I would change the locks, you can buy new doorknobs and replace them yourself to make it simple and inexpensive. I changed my locks when we bought our house, so if you're paranoid I guess I am too! |

Your husband feels that he 'judgement' is at stake?
That you don't 'trust' him?
HE SHOULD be more worried about your safety, and your comfort. IF you don't get the locks changed lets say you stay home alone one night cause hes away, HOW safe are you going to feel??
Your husband should put his ego away and take care of his wife which includes protecting her.
As was said before lost, stolen, forgotten keys could be anywhere.
Just because you think your husband is wrong does not mean you do not respect his judgement. It means you think he is wrong.
It may or may not be unneccessary in your husbands eyes, but what should matter is making you feel safe and comfy in your new home. |

I just bought a house in March and I changed the locks myself. It isn't hard to install locks because the hardest part is already done (trying to drill the hole for the lock in just the right place). Go to your local hardware store and find locksets that you like. Have the person re-key all locks alike (must be all one brand like Kwikset,Schlage, etc) Then go home and change one lock at a time. You can do it very easy, it will give you peace of mind and your husband won't mind spending the money because of the do it yourself aspect. |

It is always good practice to change the locks on a new home. You never know who has a duplicate key. Maybe an old neighbor, friend or relative has a copy of your new house key. Even if you are renting a house, it is a good idea to ask the owner to change the locks in case the old tenants come back. A good site for info like this is http://brentconley.point2homes.biz |

New locks will cost maybe $20.00 for 2. Go to any local hardware store, Home Depot, Lowes, etc..... its not expensive at all and it was the first thing I did when I received my keys to my new house in March. Safety first. |

Your husband sounds delightful ;) Do a Yahoo or Google local search for Locksmith, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locksmith and get one to come over and change out all the locks while your husband is out . . . whether to give him a key or not, well, that's up to you :) |

I agree with you, though admittedly it seems like few people do change their locks after getting a new home (maybe thats just my perseption).
No matter what teh prior owner says, I'll bet there are a few keys to your place out there. Cousin Fred came over to visit the prior owners, he got a key and never gave it back. The prior owners were going out of tomn and gave a key to the neighbor that they never got back. Hey, maybe there is a copy of the key sitting under some rock in the from yard that the owners forgot about. Now mind you, even if there are other keys out there its highly unlikely any of them would ever be used to rob the place, but still to me its just safer to change the locks anyhow.
So I agree with you but don't think its a big deal if you don't bother changing the locks. |

Nope, you are being sensible. Have the locks rekeyed (which may be cheaper than replacing them all together). Get a quote to rekey the existing locks and one for replacement and see which would be cheaper. I had the locksmith meet us at the house the day we took possession of the house and keys and cleared escrow to change the locks out. You don't know what the previous owners have done, they may have had friends with keys that they forgot about over the years, if they had kids the key could have been lost or left at someones house. Your homeowners policy may request or require you to replace or rekey the locks in order to cover the belongings in the house. If you don't they may be able to deny the claim if there were a robbery stating you did not take adequate safety precautions when you moved in. (I have heard of some auto insurers who deny claims if you have an alarm on your car but don't set it, or if you leave the car unlocked, or window open and the car is stolen) You are not being paranoid, your hubby is being too casual about the issue to think he can "trust" the former owners. The former owners just wanted to sell their home and move on. And, they may be really nice people who would not do anything to harm you. But if they lived there for any length of time they may not really be able to remember if they have ever lost a key or given one out to a friend or relative while they went away.
Better to be safe than sorry. The cost of doing this is not very much money. |

Interesting answers to your question. I have never changed the locks after moving into a home. But you do bring up a valid reason to do so. Thanks |

One thing everyone forgets is when you go to the local Home depot or Lowes to buy a lock, each company that makes lock uses only 10-15 different keys, each lock does not have a one of a kind of key. You neighbor may have the same key right now. I can go and buy every lock set with different key codes and open 3/4 of the houses in my neighborhood. When you buy a new lock set take them to a locksmith and have a custom key made. This is also the same with older garage door openers, they all came with a pre-set code and no one changes the code. You are being sensible not paranoid. |

Taking for granted is where you went wrong.
The better way of handling it is to ask the following.
Honey, do you think we should change the locks?
If he says NO.
Then you say I AGREE, "but I would feel safer if they were re-keyed".
Would you like me to check on how much that would cost?
