single mom in idaho | Should single moms without college degrees even dream they can ever afford to own their own homes? |

Absolutely! You never know what life can hand you! If you meet someone that gets along well with you and your kid(s), your combined incomes may very well get you a home that will make all of you happy. Don't give up! I don't mean this facetiously either, but I noticed from your user name that you are "SINGLE MOM IN IDAHO". Have you thought about moving else where besides Idaho? I have never been there, so I don't know how many eligible people there are in the state. Good luck! |

No! I do not think you should DREAM about it.
I think you should formulate a plan to ACHIEVE it.
I think all the cheerleading everyone is giving you is wonderful. (Except the ones who are implying that you will need a man to do it.) But all the dreaming and cheerleading in the world is not going to get you anywhere.
If this is something you truly want, then it is going to take work and dedication on your part. You are going to need a plan.
The 1st thing I would do is to search and see if there are any grants and/or loans in your area, specifically for 1st time homwowners.
Then I would search for the same thing for low income home buyers. (sorry for this assumption, if it is incorrect).
Another thing I might do, is to get a job IN a real estate office. Real estate agent, secretary, file clerk, receptionist, housekeeper, or ANYTHING to get your foot in the door, so to speak. Even if it is just part-time.
You can contact any community action agency to see if they know of any help available.
Of course, it is also a good idea to squeak out any pennies you can from your budget. Being a single Mom, I know how hard this can be for you. But even just put your change away at the end of the day. You will be surprised how quickly it adds up.
These are just a few suggestions to get you started. You have to take the ball from here and run with it.
I wish you all the best of luck in the world and much success. |

Absolutely! Dream away. My mother-in-law did it, and so can you! She started out by working at McDonalds to support her kids and then worked as a secretary for years. She still lives in the home she raised her kids in. |

GOOD GRIef!! From these peoples responses id think you asked if you would ever fly to the moon!! I dont know what its like in Idaho but here in Ohio we have so many programs to help people buy houses!! Its not about how many kids you have or even how much money you make its about how much credit you have. You pay rent to live somewhere every month why cant you pay a mortgage? You can also look into getting into a land contract. This is 2006 please dont listen to these people trying to convince you that the only way you can own a house is with a man!!! |

Absolutely!! My mom raised three kids alone and managed to own a small home. She doesn't have a college degree, but she did start going back to school for a nursing degree while we went to school. By the time we went to high school she was able to afford to move us all to a bigger home. Think POSITIVE! Good luck! |

sure, why not? Live life as a good person, you should not be judged on your single parenting, but as a decent person, right? Hope you're ok w/this "objective" answer. |

Why not...I did it. By the grace of God, I have a beautiful 2 story, 2500 sf home, that I had custom built, in a great neighborhood. God helped me get it, and God has helped me keep it.
Don't just dream about, pray about it, and do whatever GOD tells you to do.
Oh...and yes...I'm a highschool drop out. A widow. No savings. Had a very modest salary, and poor credit. I bought the house brand new, with no money down. As a matter of fact, I left the closing with $2000 cash. I actually got paid to buy my house.
And no, I didn't use a real estate program, I trusted in GOD.
When God says yes, it's up to Him to make a way, and He does. |

There is no harm in dreaming.
However, if it is really your dream to own a home then you have to work towards getting it. Try - There is no harm. |

consider other parts of the country. if owning a home is your dream, and homes are too expensive where you live, move somewhere thats more affordable for you. |

Check out http://www.hud.gov/ . Houses that are forclosed upon can be bought from the government and you can word the contract so that they pay a portion, or all, of your closing costs.
Yes, the house may need some work. Yes, you'll need to do a lot of reading of fine print if you don't get a broker that knows what they're doing. No, you won't get a house for $1.
We just bought a 4 bedroom, 2 bath house on 2 acres for $87,000. Closing costs (taxes & filing fees) are $4,000. We're putting on a new roof, buying new appliances, and doing some other work and in total we're paying about $108,000. The house has been appraised at $130,000 so we're still making out like bandits. And there are a lot of other houses out there for less. |
