Should we buy a house with my mother?
We are in our thirties with one child, and are thinking about buying a home with my mother who would have her own "suite" with a bedroom, bath, private entrance and living room. With her paying rent, we can afford this nice home with a great school district for our son..
We are worried about privacy issues though.... I just don't know.......
Additional Details
the house would be solely in our name. She will just be renting. She works full-time and has some night and weekend hours. she is not nosy, but can be emotional and anxious, but is also a great help to us and our son. It would be REALLY tight if we didn't have her rent, and I guess we could get another renter if for some reason it didn't work out. This is a tough decision. We were all thinking it would be a five year plan. We can charge her affordable rent so she can save $ for a townhome in the future, and it will help us until I am back to work full-time instead of part-time when our kids are in school.

This is a very dicey topic here, if you read through this there's usually one question a day about how to resolve a family squable due to who is on title and who took out the mortgage. If your mom is not involved at all in the purchase of the property, ie application, cosignor, etc and is not going into title, then it really becomes a matter to be discussed internally. I would not have your mom anywhere on the loan, it will only cause problems. The privacy issue is a valid concern, I'm living it right now as myself and my better half have relocated, and instead of paying 5k to move into an apt my parents offered to have us move in with them. Yes, it's stressful and privacy is a concern, but we know we'll be out soon enough, your mom would be there on a permanent basis and that's what you need to consider

If your wife can handle it I would say yes. I assume your mother will not be on the title. You will be depending on her income for the rent. Will you be able to make your mortgage payment without the rent? Can you put up with your mother living with you? That is a question only you can answer. Good luck!!

No. Have you EVER heard of this situation having a happy ending? I am decades older then you and I have never seen this work out, in fact it usually destroys relationships.

If you want mom to move in you have to do it for free.

Find a smaller home in the great school district, you will be far better off.

This is a though question. I would say yes, because it is your mother, and I suppose that she wants to help you and live close to you. How well do you get along with her? How often would she ask for your help and how often would she offer her help to you? Is your husband comfortable with this idea? Please analyze all situations before taking a decision. And, you will need privacy, and even if your mother has separate entrance and place to live in the house, what happens for example if for some reason she can not pay anymore rent? Good luck with taking the best decision!

while there are joint tenancy and
tenants in common purchase methods/deeds/
how about just renting to her--instead of buying with her?

Bringing in anyone on a deed opens cans
of worms.........not horrible but not
suggested either.

and you would definititely want a very
clear rental agreement with her
regardless of part ownership or not.

I can help you with any of that.

luck

If she is a cobuyer, then she's not a "renter."

Once kids are grown. They need to flee the nest. If you want you're complete independence don't do it. Parents will always see you as child. They meddle in disputes between their child and his or her spouse. My opinion don't do it. You and your mom should have your seperate places.
