jono_extraordinary_g... | Should we take a lodger in because we are really broke? |
We could go into arrears if we don't do something.
This was my wife's idea ,as when she quit her job
last year to go abroad for an operation and extended
holiday with her family, I guess we both underestimated
how hard it would be for her to get employed again.
Six months on I am the only breadwinner and am working
two jobs full and part time to make ends meet, only they are
not, I am constantly overdrawn and cannot see, unless
my wife gets a full time job soon, how we can last.
I don't want to sell the house - I love our home and
just cannot seem to get my wife motivated. Like anyone
else I have problems of my own, and love my privacy.
I will have no peace of mind if there is a third party
in the house. We have no kids and do have a spare room.
I am just annoyed no job opportunities are there for my wife,
if she was more proactive maybe something would turn up.
Any advice? Thanks ! |

I suggest strongly that you get a boarder. I know that you value your privacy, but at the moment, it would be an excellent idea. If your wife can't get a job, or won't get a job, then this is the only option.
I would check out university websites. Often they have online billboards for you to post ads like this for free. I suggest asking for a mature age student, and post how much you want per week. For expenses charge at least another $10 a week, and a bond of at least 4 weeks rent.
Go through with your wife and work out what questions you want to ask prospective housemates. For instance, smoker or non smoker? Are they a 'tidy' person? Do they use drugs?
I suggest you write up a little document outlining your expectations - rent to be paid 2 weeks in advance, and the amount. What will be the course of action if they damage your property, or if you damage theirs.
I also suggest trying an ad in the newspaper classifieds.
Your spare room is sitting there vacant when you could be earning money so you don't have to work so hard. Perhaps also the extra inconvenience of having another person in the house may spur your wife into action. If she really really wanted a job, she could get one. Even pizza delivery or cleaning is better than nothing. There is no shame in those kinds of work. A job is a job.
Best wishes |

you need to have a serious talk to the wife to see if she is willing to help.
i wouldnt like to have a stranger in my house..but if its the only way to save the house, it might be worth it for a short term let - just to get you out of the mess you are in. how awful for you...i do sympathise - good luck! |

well obviously the best solution here would be for your wife to get a job! it seems strange that you can get 2 jobs but she cant get one?! cant she just get some admin or bar work to bring some money in as a temporary measure whilst she is persuing a job that she really wants?
i guess whilst you dont want a lodger it is better than going into arrears particularly because of the report this morning that more banks are going to repossess to stop debt building up.
talk to your wife . . . tell her how unhappy a lodger would make you and mention her getting something temporary . . . the whole situation seems unfair on you |

It is always a risk to get a lodger - I've been there.
You could always contact local large employers for people who just want a room during the week and go home at weekends.
Good luck |

Job opportunities are there for everyone. She should lower her targets when job searching. Having a lodger is a great idea. I would suggest you find someone mature. |

Renting a room can be a good way to raise extra money and it can be tax free up to around £5k a year.
Contact large businesses in the area saying you have a room to rent or if you live near London, there are agencies that will find decent tenants for you.
If you get a man and the wife runs off with him, you will miss him!. |

You should advertise for a lodger, anything is better than loosing your home right, and as for your wife maybe she should try getting any job so she is bring in a wage. |

Your wife really needs to get her act together if things were that bad she would take any job at all, there is always jobs, might not be ideal jobs but there is always something, maybe go with an agency? You really need to sit down with her and drum into her how serious things are and how stressed you feel and she must help. good luck x |

You can put in a rent for the spare room and put limitations if you do start getting desperate, if you really do not want some bum hanging out in your living room, you need to get your wife a job. |

Kick her up the backside and tell her to get a job....does she not realise the problems shes causing!!?
OK take a lodger on but only for a short time say 6 months just to keep your head out of the water...but long term no...if she wont find a job..why dint you find her one.
sorry to judge her without even knowing er..but lazy is the word that springs to mind.
I'm the person in my house who doesn't have a job after 9 months of ill health, we are desperate for money so I have recently sold most of my possessions on eBay to help the household income...I'm starting a part time job next week...im doing what i can.
I do hope your wife is claiming benefits? |

Thats a tough one,,, I would be weary on letting someone come live with you.. Especially, a stranger.. And, someone I knew I wouldn't charge...
It would be a hassle, and suck...
Don't know, what you could do... Except try to motivate your wife... Sounds, like she is a bit lazy on finding a job? maybe... or she is just tired of being rejected or tired of no jobs available... IDK
Either way,,, sounds like your wife needs to choke on her pride.. And, get a job that is below her standards for now.. Doesn't matter, if she has a PhD. Get her motivated enough to apply at Wal-Mart, if you have too... Atleast, until she gets a job she likes... |

Advertise the room for short-lets only, so you can try out what it is like to live with another person.
There are benefits and drawbacks. Benefits being the extra money, company, increased security for your home. They may even do odd jobs. Drawbacks they might be dishonest, steal from you, want to stay forever, cause damage.
Just use your good judgement for the people who apply. |

Rent the room BUT use a written lease agreement.
You should qualify your resident the same way you would if you were renting a separate apartment or house.
Get the advice of a professional. Let the professional place that resident. It might cost more than a month's rent, but in the long run it will be worth it.
Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it!

Depends where you are. If in a city, you could rent a room to a foreign student who is studying for a few months. There must be a home-stay agency. Of course, you'll need to be approved but I think that's pretty safe. |

Sell your home and downsize to what you can afford.
A home is just a thing that can be changed to suit conditions.
Perhaps move to where there are better job prospects for you both. |
