Unless your lease states otherwise your landlord is correct. in researching your question all the lease agreements I read state that the tenant is responsible for lost , or stolen keys at their own expense, ( including locks , due to stolen keys)
So you need to ask the landlord who he hires to change them, & what is the charge , that you will pay for it, if it is reasonable. Otherwise see if someone you know knows how to do this & get hem to do it for nothing , or a small fee & you are also responsible for providing the landlord with a duplicate key for emergency purposes , should you have the locks change from the one that was in place when you rented the apartment*. |

Your landlord had nothing to do with your purse being stolen, so you will have to pay to have the locks changed. He is within his rights to refuse to pay for the new locks. He didn't say he wouldn't put the locks in, only that you would have to pay for them. |

i think since it was you who lost the keys then you have to replace the locks....but make sure you get permission from the landlord. i could be wrong so ask an attorney. |

Well you lost the keys so if you pay for the locks he will probably put them on for you. |

He is not liable. The act of your purse getting taken has no bearing whatsoever for him to change a lock. His only responsibility is to make sure the place is in the same condition it was when you signed the lease and nothing more. As long as the lock works then he does not have to change it.
However he may change the lock if you pay or it. This situation has to be one of compromise. |

You ARE expected to replace the locks (or have them rekeyed) at your own expense. It is not the fault of the landlord that your keys were stolen from you, causing this situation. Check with a locksmith to determine what would be the cost to remedy the situation, and be prepared to pay accordingly for the service. |

You cannot get the landlord to comply. Like others have said, it is not the landlords fault you lost your purse, therefore, why should he be out the $25 to $100 for new locks?
If you are that afraid, go to any Home Depot etc and buy a set of new knobs and deadbolt. It is extremely simple to change them. Even a caveman can do it! |

I think since the keys were in your possession, then it would be your responsibility to replace the locks. See if it would be covered by your renter's insurance? |

You lost the keys so you are responsible for paying for the new locks if you want them. |

Your landlord is in his rights to say that you have to pay for new locks. YOU had your purse stolen, he didn't lose the keys so he is not responsible. New locks are not expensive you can get one at home depot or Lowe's. If he is willing to install at no charge that is good. I paid to have my locks replaced when my keys were lost and I didn't bother asking my landlord if he would.d replace them because the renters law in my state does not require it. Now lets say he loses the keys to his rental properties, well then HE would be responsible to replace the locks. |

Generally speaking it depends on the type of lease or contract you drew up with your landlord. Locks are cheap and anybody who -wants- to get in will unless you fortify your entire apartment which is not cost-effective. A deadbolt will suffice.
He or she is under no legal obligation to replace the locks for you unless explicitly stated anywhere in the lease, OR they break on their own. Seriously, buy a deadbolt and install it. Its like, twenty bucks at the most. (make sure its to the right dimensions for the door, if you dont know ask a friend to help you with it) |

He/She won't. It's not his responsibility to keep your belongings safe. It is their responsibility to keep the property or the building free of damage.
If you rented your apartment, then the area in which you rent belongs to you and it is YOUR responsibility to keep the items safe. It's natural for your landlord to reject your request. And if they are a stubborn person, you are highly unlikely to be able to get him to comply. |

depends where you are living...if it is an apartment/townhouse that is owned by someone other than the landlord...contact them. My landlord is useless. and once I went to the head office and told them what I needed done it was honestly done the next day =) |

I would think any landlord would be concerned, not only for their tenant but their property, the possibly of theft on their property or vandalism and how that would make people feel renting from them.
If there's nothing in your lease or contract about him being responsible I'd go ahead and change the locks and give him notice you've done that. |
