he was offering you the chance to purchase one with a payment card at £5.50 a week. if you need one why didnt you just accept. it takes a month to come through anyway

poli_b2001
He doesnt need entry into your house. He'll check the records in a few days time to see if a licence has been purchased for that address. And if so he'll move on, if not he'll be back to make sure you sign for one there and then with a possible fine.

I know loads of people who dont have a tv licence and it infuriates me as im paying £11 a month so i can watch Heroes (Its the only thing on BBC i watch) play DVD's and play my xbox. I dont watch TV

I'm confused! I'm from Australia and over here there are no such thing as a T.V. licence! Are you in the U.K.? My God! We pity you! Why do you put up with such petty and unfair laws like that? They are really making you pay for the war in the Middle East, with taxes like that! I have six T.V.s all round the house! God knows what I'd have to pay if we had such a law! Have a good day, hon.

You don't have to give him the name and you don't have to allow entry into the property. He'll probably wait a month and call back if you still don't have a licence. Even if you don't have a licence, if he calls again, do not let him into the property without a valid warrant and certainly don't sign any paperwork.
I haven't had one for 3 years and have yet to have someone visit my property, even though the TV Licensing people send me at least one threatening letter per month.

Everyone in the UK with a TV is meant to have a licence.

They even have a licence for the blind - admittedly at a reduced fee - because just listening to the TV still counts!

They find you by checking their records and looking for any gaps in who has paid. Once they are on to you, it is easier to pay.

I read about a guy who had a weekend home he went to a few times a year and while there he liked to not have a TV. The TV people kept on writing to him because they couldn't believe that you could own a house and not have a TV set.

It is not clear whether you are resident in the UK. If you are, and since you are using the internet, as you have put the question, you can easily get it by applying it on their webiste. Whether you would be caught or not without having the licence, it is a secondary question. Do not bother to answer the
caller, as you would not know who he or she is?

Capt Jack
You have to have a TV licese if you have a TV, Video recorder or PC and use them to view broadcast TV in the UK. This includes viewing programmes taped off TV in a Licensed household.

It is legal to have a TV to play video games or play back pre-recorded DVDs and videos without a license. Thing is in this case the TV and if applicable DVD need to be detuned, and TV licensing will give you a hard time and treat you as if you are trying to con them.

You do not need a license for a PC if you do not have a TV tuner card!

I don't understand how you can be in the process of setting one up- it takes 5 minutes to do either online or on the phone. If you mean you've applied but not recieved it do not worry, there will be a record of it.

I would just make sure the license is set up- if it's "in the post" there will be a record of it.

TallPaul
He wanted a name so he could check records in a week or so to see if a licence has been set up at that address.

No, they won't try and charge you immediately, but if you take the piss, then they will.

He has no right of entry, but has every right to knock on your door.

If you want to watch TV you will have to get one now he has visited you.

You do not need a tv licence for using a computer - even with Broadband unless you have a card attached allowing you to watch TV WHile it is being broadcast.

In the same way, if you only use your TV as a monitor to play DVDs or games, and do not have an areal attached, again, you do not need a TV licence.

I got caught and threatened because I did not have a TV licence. After a visit to the Citizens Advice Bureau I found that I did not need a licence as I did not watch tv AS IT WAS BEING BROADCASTED! You can ask your neighbour to copy Eastenders and watch it through the video/dvd half an hour later and you are legal but it is not legal to record it on your own video to watch later without a licence - barmy eh?

One letter later, and I have never heard from them again!

And no, they have no legal right of entry into your home unless you invite them in and they cannot push their way in or use any sort of force.

I've had one tv licence in 7 years at my property..been court for not having one....won my case and awarded costs against the licencing authority!
Dont belive them when they say they can make you pay for one..theres a few ways to avoid paying.(but I'm not sharing!).

This is one of those taxes I really dont agree with...especially the constant harrasment I have suffered when I hav'nt had any reciving equipment here.

tedrfandthedog
He doesn't have to gain entry into the house, he will be able to pick up what signals are leaving your home. If you have a TV OR A PC with tv card in your home (in the UK) you HAVE TO HAVE A LICENCE. If you live in a block of flats it might be easier to get away with, but in a house it may be harder to evade.

shih tzu lady
You are required to hold a tv licence before you start using a tv at that property. Yes you need to purchase one and quickly because he will check that you have completed that purchase. You are liable to receive a fine if you dont go ahead and purchase one now. Whatever the people before you did or didnt do is nothing to do with your case. Protect your own interest and purchase. He wont need to see whether you have a tv in use by entering the property, so obstructing him wont make one bit of difference.
