(UK only) Have you slipped into negative equity yet?
It seems house prices are starting to tumdle in some areas

Nope. I still have loads of equity in my house. It only becomes a problem if you are looking to sell anyway.

I did buy my house about 4 years ago and even then I had a good deposit to put down.

The thing with negative equity is that it is only bad if you intend to sell. If you want to stay put, it doesn't really matter if your house loses value temporarily.

The price of houses does need some correction. A friend bought hers for £50,000. and now expects over £400,000 for it. In almost 2 years not a single viewer has called. I wonder why.

I bought my house 30 years ago for £13k. It was worth £170k a few months ago, and I only owe a few grand on the mortgage so the bottom would really have to fall out of the housing market for me to be in negative equity. That said, i really feel for the younger people who have had to get such huge mortgages just to get on the housing ladder. Hope the housing market levels out soon for them.

Mr Nobody
It would take some kind of armageddon for that to happen to me. I bought my house seven years ago and it's worth about 2.5 times the purchase price.

Prices aren't tumbling, they are just either flat or falling slightly, and you'll only be affected if you are a serial housemover.

Not quite so bad here in the States. Housing prices had been skyrocketing for the past 5 years...they're dropping back, finally. It's still ridiculous here tho...people were buying houses for 75k and expecting the next buyer would pay 175K...so nobody's buying right now...There's empty houses everywhere and sellers keep dropping prices...and qualified buyers just set back and wait...

Butternut27
know of 2 people who have already....they are living in different parts of London...

Aye. Right!

Nope. I didn't fall into the trap of paying over the odds for my house. It's value has increased by about 75% in four years, and I now own much more than the bank does! yay!
