Want to help my brohter pay his mortage.?
hi,
I live with my older brother in his house for free. Now I graduate from school and have a job nearby. I may still stay in his house for a while, but since I already have a job, I figured I should pay something for living in his house. I am thinking about, helping him to pay his mortgage on his house, like $200-$300 per month. I guess all I need to do is, write a check to his mortgage account, right? Will any tax issue be involved in this situation? I thought about writing a check to my brother directly. But people say if I write a check to him, that would be considered as his income. He needs to pay tax on it. Is this right?
Thanks.

I guess I just give him cash or write the check directly to mortgage company. I think giving him a fixed amount is better than buying goods or gas, and it is easier for me too.
Thank you all for answer my questions.

Rather figuring out ways to cheat the government (I know, who cares) Why don't you buy $200-$300 in groceries for the house? maybe fill up his gas tank once in a while or pay a utility bill? I'm sure any or all of those things would be appreciated and there's no need to involve the taxman

I would pay him directly...if you are only staying at his house for a while then I wouldnt even bother worrying about it being income...you can deposit up to 4k a month without declaring it income...

reenzz
Just give him cash each month.

not if no one knows about it! just give him 300 in cash and dont worry about it. Unless you are worried about your brother kicking you out without notice I would just go cash.

If you write him a check, that makes him your landlord and you his tenant and it will be will be treated as rental income which he would have to declare on his taxes.

I think you should pay your brother directly, and I wouldn't say that is income, because he would have had to pay that portion of the mortgage if you were not there. You are helping him with the expenses, it just lowers the costs for him... I don't think he could get into trouble for accepting the payment from you. If you are worried about it, why don't you do something else, like pay for all the food? Or just pay him cash towards food and bills each month, and call it good?

you need to write the ck directly to the mortage company. they are right, it would be considered rental income if given to him.

Why not just hand him 300 cash each month , who would be the wiser ? :))
