shano 2006 | We live in a 1 bedroom flat, but share the building with 3 other tenants.? |
Last night (Thursday) one of the tenants had people over. They talked loudly and had loud music on from 11:30pm until 5am. I told them to keep it down, but it simply started up again.
They also slam the doors constantly when entering/exiting the building.
is there anything else we can do? We intend to contact the landlord today, but are there any laws for this? |

First off, if they made noise till 5am, you should have called the police. If you didn't do it then, you really can't get the police involved now. Besides, you will not have much of a case if this "party" happened only once.
In any case "slamming doors constantly" doesn't rank high because it could have been any one of your neighbours. You couldn't prove it was the residents of Flat A, could you?
Your best bet is to speak to your landlord to have a word with them. Making a formal complaint to your local council is not a good idea considering your case, and the police are not an option until the partying starts again.
Bear in mind one thing though - should you decide to pursue a formal complaint, you must be very wary of making the slightest noise. I filed such a complaint once, and it turned out, a week later, that my neighbours lodged a similar complaint against me because my child kept them awake with her midnight crying.
Communicate first, a formal complaint must be your last resort - remember, you still have to live in the building with them. |

You could call the council if they are constantly noisy - however its your landlord that really needs to take action. Talk to the other 2 tenants if all 3 of you complain it will hold more weight. |

Yes, there are laws, chat to landlord first. If not resolved speak to environmental health, they can enforce reasonable behaviour and sieze hi fi etc, or police can issue harrassment order, good luck,. You must be seen to be reasonable by giving them the chance first to comply. |

If in UK, contact the local council and they should be able to have a word with the tenants, if no joy, contact the police and tell them they are being anti social and could they come and sort them out |

Firstly, discuss it kindly in person a few times.
Your council will have and Environmental Enforcement department or something like that. Look at their website. Here is an example from one council: http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/Environment/Pollution/NoisePollution/NoisyNeighbours.htm .
You can also ask for help from the police. This is the sort of thing which the Safer Neighbourhood scheme should assist with. Each ward has it's own named police officers. This information will be available from your local police force's website. Here is an example: http://www.met.police.uk/saferneighbourhoods/boroughs/lewisham/saferneighbourhoods.htm#00AZGX .
Your landlord can remind the tenant of the terms and conditions of the contract. However, the landlord has not liability for his tenants. It is probably a clause in the tenancy agreement that he can evict them, but the cost of finding new tenants, etc., means it is unlikely.
I hope you find this helpful.
Good luck.

You have the right to enjoy a quiet life. Speak to your landlord, there is a clause in your contract that you must ahere to regarding noise. This will be in the other tenants contract. Your landlord can give the tenants a warning, and can evict them if they do not comply.
The other thing is you can always move, if nothing gets better. |

yes there is after 12 am the music has 2 be turned down, if after 12am thay don't after telling them nice you can phone the police thay will come out and tell them 2 turn if down and warn them also if you can tape it from when it starts untill it stops so you can show the police and the landlord, you will end this , thats the law. good luck i hope i helped |

There are anti-social laws in place now so that the police can be called and can take action.
For unreasonable noise at unreasonable times, you should call the police as soon as possible, so they can visit the noise maker immediately.

You are now "morally" right to take this to the environmental health/noise abatement department of your local council. If you want it dealing with straight away, report it as a disturbance to the local police. (Use the local police station number, not 999)
Consider the possibility of it just being a one-off though, it could end up being more aggro than it's actually worth.
If you get no joy, consider fighting fire with fire. Put your music on at 5am so they can't get any sleep either. They'll soon give it up. |
