blastradii | What's a fair way to split the rent amongst roomates? |
I live with 4 other roomates in a 5 bedroom house. What's a fair way to split the rent? We've taken bathroom, closet space, and square footage into consideration.
There are other factors to consider such as: accessibility to living areas, etc etc.
We based our rent by first setting the base case as all rent is split up equally and then deducting and increasing each other's rent depending on the factors above.
Are there other more scientific or fair way to assess the rent split? |

split everything evenly. Straight down the middle. Take everything and divide it by 5. You each have your own Bedroom and you share everything else. Don't make it more complicated then it has to be. |

hey just split the rent in among ur 4 room mates and avoid being more calculative as it will lead to more chaos. |

Easier to just split it 5 ways. |

wow I would have thought four ways would have been fine but if you must go by square feet find out the sqaure footage of the home and figure out how many square feet each person is using figure out the cost of the home in sruare feet then take how many square feet each person has and figure out the cost by footage |

It doesn't really matter what you do to divide it up, just make sure everyone feels it's fair. Have a meeting to discuss how things will be paid for up front, so nothing comes up down the line. If the person with the smallest room thinks he should be paying less, he should say so up front.
Five people is a lot to coordinate but if everyone's open and willing to listen, you should be able to come up with someone you can all live with. |

To keep it simple, I would factor OUT the accessibility issues, etc. I would do it ONLY on square footage, just like they do in real estate appraisal. Figure square footage on the bedrooms, closets and bathrooms. If someone has their own bath, then they get charged for the footage for it. If 2 people share a bath, split the footage between them. Dont even factor in the common areas of the house. Just assign a value per square foot in the personal areas, calculate how much personal area each has and voila. This may take some doing ( assigning a sq. foot value ) in order to hit the dollar amount your looking for. good-luck. |
