What's an appropriate fee to charge for renting out a bedroom?
A childhood friend of mine needs a place to stay while she goes to school. She'll only be staying there about 3-4 nights a week. My townhouse has 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, gym in basement, wireless internet, satellite tv, and free parking. The mortgage is about 1600/month, and utilities are about $400/month.

500-600 a month

in all reality, none of those financials matter if you want to cut her a break. but..If you want a mathmatical way of looking at it
your "rent" is about 1600 a month she will be using only that one room. Which theretically would put u at about 535 but she will only be there for 3-4 nights a week which puts her at 15-20 days a month so half to 2/3 of that 535 is...roughly 270 to 355. You could split up the utilities by half or simply by whichever utilities she uses. If she doesnt use the internet why make her pay right? Still it all depends on if you want to cut her a break,if you need the money and whats shes willing to pay. Good luck and keep in mind that Judge Judy has a show for a reason. Make sure that expectations are crystal clear and you always keep a record of the bills and such.

fluke
$500 would be fair

$ 500 on the rent and if your utilities go up as a result of her staying there. She should pay the difference.
She should also buy her own groceries.

which city?
it also sounds like your paying way too much for your townhouse and utilities...

edit..in Baltimore, MD
400/month will be fair

$520/mo. Since you have 3 bedrooms, I'd charge a little less than 1/3 of the mortgage cost ($450). This is to reflect your true after tax cost and even though she's only there 1/2 time, her stuff is there full-time. I'd also add half of 1/3 of the utilities ($70) - due to her 1/2 time usage. This adds up to a total of $520/mo.

If there's a HOA fee at your townhouse, I'd add 1/3 of that charge also.

I live in Columbia, MD, and that is about the going rate.

m_palidin_2001
that depends entirely on your level of friendship and how much she will be moving in but for starters $10/day+.1 of all utilities+share of food bill= rent. this could be a good place to start.

A room with house privilages is worth about 150.00 a week to friends. Go for it, you both get a deal.

my townhome is the same size and I charge $550/mo including all utilities. I've had 5 roomates found off the net and they felt it was a reasonable amount

$50.00 a night or $100.00 a night if she is only going to stay 3-4 nights a week.

You can read classified ads in newspapers or online for your area to find out what a room typically rents for. Be sure to take into account whether it will include use of your kitchen.

It depends upon your area, and also upon your friendship discount.

200 to 300 is more than fair
