It depends on what's important to you. You will generally have little or no exterior maintenance (mowing, weeding, shrub trimming, etc) if you rent a townhouse. Whereas, in most cases, if you rent a regular house, you are responsible for all that.
However, you normally have more privacy and maybe larger yards in a regular house. |

All things being the same, I would go for the larger one. Mind you, if one is more run down than the other, you may want to go for the one in better shape.
As for bills, you might see a reduction in heating and cooling with the townhouse, as it has units on either side of it that provide very effective insulation. The detatched house has all four sides exposed.
Mind you, having people attached at both sides my not work for you noise-wise, but that is different.
So, if both are the same price:
1) Take the larger one
2) Take the one in better shape
3) Townhouse might provide utility savings

I would opt for the house. A family of four needs room to play in the yard and privacy. However, If you don't want the maintenance, I would go for the town house. |

I would prefer a house for a family of 4 (ours, too). We lived in a townhouse for 2 years, and I was very unhappy there, just too close for comfort. First of all, your neighbors are, literally, right next door. There just isn't enough privacy to my liking. You can hear your neighbors and see you neighbors at times you may not prefer to. As far as the children, there isn't much space for them to play outside, although ours did have a community pool.
We moved into our home 16 years ago and everyone absolutely loves it, plenty of room inside and out. We have neighbors, of course, but they're not right on top of us and no more hearing what's going on through the walls.
As far as the expense is concerned regarding bills, it depends on the square footage. If the house is larger than the town house, expect to pay a bit more on electricity (air conditioning/heating). Other than the utility bill, everything else should be comparable, although you will have to buy a lawn mower or pay for a lawn care service.
Hope you are happy with whichever home you choose. |

in the very short run you are cheaper with a town house. but in the not so distant future you are better with a house. you can always add extra insulation and other measure which will keep your bills lower and teach the children to conserve when they can. it all adds up. my boyfriend and i currently rent a house and its not hard to keep the bills down with a lot of conservation and only needing to use things when needed. Our electric bill runs about 35 a month. |

If you both have high powered jobs or work lots of hours then a town house might be worth the lack of privacy. No lawn care, no snow shoveling, you can enjoy the out doors with no work! However if you like gardening, lawn work, value your privacy, then house is better. |

When you own your home, you can write off the mortgage interest and taxes on your return. Also, owning a home allows you to build equity and increases your credit ranking.
Renting does nothing but make your landlord wealthy. |

I assume when you are saying house then you are refering to single family home. Single family home are usually priced higher than the town homes, but you need to consider different factors like where both these properties are located like school district, crime rate etc. Generally value of the homes reflects all these facotrs. So if the both these properties are on the same kind of location then no brainer, in my opinion you should go ahead and buy the single family home. Hope this helps! |

If you're renting it doesn't matter what you go with. Purchasing is a different story though. And as far as cheaper, it depends on the footage and demographics. |
