What's the best way to get rid of the smoking smell in my house?
Tenants smoked in my house, and I need to get rid of the smell.

I have carpets and tile floors.

Other than steaming the carpets, any other suggestions?

Thanks all! :)

Trouble
The only way to get rid of the smoke smell permanently is completely clean and repaint.

The carpets should be steam cleaned, professionally. Anything else will only mask the odor for a short time.

Also, walls need to be washed down (TSP solution), primed to seal the smell and then repainted. Ceilings primed and painted.

Smoke will also penetrate woodwork. Which should also be washed down, at the least.

If you are not into doing all of the above, at least wash down the walls and woodwork, clean the carpet and rent an ozone air purifier or ionizer system.

Another temporary option is a product called Odo Ban. It is sold in a gallon jug at Sam's Club. It can be diluted to different strengths for different uses.

I once had a tenant with the absolute worst body odor - literally a mix of dirty sweat socks and underwear. When he moved out, he left furniture behind which was putrid. It was like I walked into a brick wall of stank just entering his apartment. I've never experienced anything like it ... ever.

I repainted all walls and ceilings, had the wood floors refinished and the smell remained. I cleaned everything and then sprayed Odo Ban on everything -walls, ceilings, floors, woodwork, in closets, on the window screens & blinds - and left all of the windows open to let the apartment air out for a few days. The smell finally went away.

You have to paint, the smell is actually in the walls too. It is so gross, I can't believe people choose to smoke.

Clean the ceiling fans really well too, they will literally have the tar from the cigarettes on them.

Sprinkle the carpets with bi-carb of soda, leave 24 hrs and then vacuum up.
Alternatively shampoo the carpet and add a cupful of white vinegar to the mix. The smell of vinegar will disappear when it dries and will disinfect the carpet/floor.

try lime - you can buy it like kitty litter - leave it in the rooms in a tub (much like kitty litter) for a few days. The lime will absorb alot of the smell. Check with home depot or Menards (fresh paint will also help)

Cleaning the carpet will be a must. If you can't paint, the walls and woodwork will have to be washed. Open as many windows as you can and get fresh air moving. Use scented candles and oder eliminator spray. (Glade makes a nice one) Good Luck.

There's an easy way. Get some of that fabric refresher from the store, spray your stuff down, open all your windows, and put fans in them, with the fan pushing air OUT. Some good air time and a little refreshing and you shouldn't be too far away from some clean air. Some laundry washing wouldn't hurt either... and some carpet powder on the carpet as that's usually the most stubborn spot. But I've been through similar, and I've had the smell out within a day without breaking my back. Good luck!

I had a smoker roommate. When she moved out, I used lots of Febreeze on the carpets, washed down the walls and cabinets and tiles with Mr. Clean, cleaned the blinds using shaving cream and newspaper, threw the curtains in the washing machine, kept the windows open. I had to Febreeze the carpets a few times times to fully get the smell out.
