Omar | What's the fairest way of dividing up the rent for a 2BR apartment with 3 people? |
It's a 2 bedroom apartment with 3 people living in it; 2 of whom share 1 bedroom, and 1 has his own bedroom.
Is a 50%/50% split fair? The 2 people sharing 1 bedroom pay 25% each, whereas the other person pays 50%.
Would it be more fair for everyone to pay 1/3 of the total cost?
Or is some other way better? |

I think frogfairy's answer is reasonable: about 40% for the single roomie, 30% 30% for the other 2; they all share the same amount of living space besides the bedroom, then, split the rest of shared expenses (utilities) by 3).
Fair enough? |

The person living alone pays 50%, others 25% each of rent, and divide all the bills by 3. |

If the two sharing a room are not involved (i.e. boyfriend/girlfriend), then it would be more fair for a 50/25/25 cost split as far as rent goes. The rest of the bills should be 1/3 each. |

The person with the bedroom to themselves should pay about 40-45%, with the other two splitting the remainder. 50% may seem fair, but the person isn't using double the utilities (water, electricity, etc.). 33% would be too low for them, since they DO get extra bedroom space. I'd say 40% to 45% would be quite fair. |
|

I've got all the answers....
 |
Just do the 1/3.....the odd-man out is going to have to put up with 2 extra in the bathroom...are you going to give him 50 percent of all space? If he pays half the rent...he "technically" owns half the space.....and the odd man out never gets that. The odd man out gets stuck watching TV really loud when the other two are "cuddling", if you know what I mean. For the inconvience of it....and if they get full run of the place, keep it at a 1/3. It's only a hundred bucks in the end, more than likely.
In reality, there should be someone "in charge" of the place. If the couple want to rent to the single, or the single wants to rent/sublet to the couple, do it that way. Instead of splitting it up. Save a lot more trouble in the end. |

The two people sharing a room should get a cheaper price than the person with the single. The simple fact that you can have privacy (just by yourself or with friends/significant other) gives you a lot more value to your single. |

The one with his own room should just pay a little more not 50% but more than 33. |

how about 40% for the single roomie, 30% 30% for the other two? you all share the same amount of living space besides the bedroom, so I think that 50% is too much for the one person.
I lived with my husband and a friend of ours who had the basement of the house. He got 2 rooms (him and his daughter) hubby and I had 3 bedrooms upstairs (us, 1 kid, office) we paid $600 and he paid $400. |
