What are some sure signs of being in a predominantly upper middle class neighbourhood?
Note: Upper middle class usually implies people who hold a high level profession (eg. surgeon, Judge, university lecturer), or a job in upper management (company vice presidents, senior investment analysts, sales managers, etc.). They may also be the proprietor of a mid-range to large business.

Well-kept houses and gardens (they pay to have someone do this). Usually a Conservative area (see MPs). Grammar schools/private schools nearby. The shops - unique boutiques, gift shops, food shops etc. Cars mean nothing: you can buy anything these days on any income more or less. no mattresses on pavement. Lots of property maintenance vehicles around. Read the local press - it can be very revealing, espcailly the Letters to the Editor bit. There'll belots of outraged people protesting at affordable housing, library closures, potholes, the 11+. The women all drive Range Rovers, they are all total bores, obsessed with self and their status. I should know, I've been here six years.

No cars on the front lawn and the gate is still on its hinges. Oh yes and no BNP flags hanging out of the windows

Easy - in poor neighbourhoods people take items when you leave a skip outside your home. In middle class neighbourhoods people put stuff into your skip!

Well that's a fairly interesting question. Would love to know why you are askin. I think you can tell right off the bat when you go through neighborhoods whether it be lower, middle, upper middle or upper class.

The homes and their sizes are a big give away as well as the upkeep. In a upper mid all the homes are going to be quite nice and lawns landscaped and taken care of (not all have professional lawn maintanance people, but a fair amount will). There wont be cars parked all over the road unless a party is going on. Wont find cars parked on the front lawn either or junker cars left in the driveway.

Most upper middle class homes would have a garage with side access vs. having the garage doors in the front -- probably because they are spaced out further, properties are bigger and it just looks nicer. In todays world, many of these homes will have 3+ car garages. The yards will be clean and tidy - no stuffed sofas on the front porch or old refrigerators, that sort of thing. You wont find gutters hanging down, siding off the house or other obvious signs of disrepair.

The houses aren't one on top of the other and not they don't look like they were built on a plowed down corn field --- no trees and backyards all coming together.

All brick homes, not just a front brick facade. The yards will be at least 1/2 acre most likely more. The yards will have mature trees. The neighborhood will not have the look of a converted corn field. The homes will be predominantly 2500 sq ft or above. The lawns will be well kept. Probably be at least one SUV in the driveway if they are not in the gararge but most will keep their cars in the garage.

Yes, cars are the giveaway: less than 30% Mini's (the new sort), and your definitely not in UMC territory (although you have to be careful - more than 70%, and it's LMC pretending to be UMC!)

Go to the city website and get the median income/education level for that area. Also look at the crime rate and schools.

look at the cars parked in the area. Lexuses, Audis, Caddies are ususally a good indication

If you need to ask, you are not upper middle class, just nosey!! HeHe sorry dint know, it might have something to do with how many burnt out cars in a road.

Biggie @ Arbor Mortgage
You don't see suspicious cars in the street, with someone standing outside of the car getting a "package". There are no call girls on the corners & no boarded up windows & doors on homes. The lawns are well maintained & sprinkler systems in 75% of the lawns. You don't see mobile homes ie trailers & most of the home are made out of brick.
