It is glorified apartment living, and it is only as nice as your neighbors and the surrounding neighborhood.
My ex & I lost our shirts on one early in our marriage--he bought in what looked like an up and coming area, but it quickly turned to a slum. We had several cars broken into, the grounds were always a mess, the neighbors were loud, and we constantly dealt with roaches. You have no privacy to speak of, no outdoors or place for kids to play safely, and you usually have to walk quite a ways carrying groceries etc.
If you discover too late that you have made a mistake, they can be very hard to unload--we couldn't keep Section 8 renters even using the on-site management company, and ended up taking a huge loss just to unload it--it dinged our credit pretty severely, and had we been less well off, it could have bankrupted us.
In my opinion, you would be much better off with a single family home.
However, if you like apartment style living and don't want to deal with landscaping, and can do the market research and determine that property values aren't going to take a dive on you, it might be ok. |

You are paying for air. No land or building. |

Hi cj_palomo,
Besides the other nuisances that others have mentioned already, is that the appreciation is not the same as a single family residence. The HOA (Homeowner's Owner's Association) is very expensive and not a tax deductible. It usually increases every couple of years. |

Its just like living in an apartment. You hear your neighbors, and they hear you. |

You can't put things outside, you can't let your dogs play outside. Parking is a pain in the butt. Most have only one car garages, and they are way to small for anything but a sub compact car. You have to pay the extra money every month for the gardeners, the walls are sometimes paper thin. I lived in a condo for one year and sold that puppy as soon as I could. I hated it. |

You dont have a house...Duh
When you have a house, some of the "work" is also a stress remover. Example, doing the lawn on a Sunday morning with the birds chirping |

You have no yard of your own. Some buildings have specific rules, like you can't paint, or no pets. Also, noise, you can hear people above and beside you. Parking if your building doesn't have a lot or a parking garage. Another thing is space, some have tons, some are only like one room. Other than that, don't know.
Another thing is if you have a pet, then you have to go up and down the elevator or stairs. If it is only stairs, grocery's can be a hassle.
Do what you want, but it's basically like living in an apartment. |

noise from neighbors, some restrictions due to condo rules (my Son heard about the Cardinals sign he put up, no signs allowed) It's like living in an apartment for the most part! |

They are hard to sell when it time to move out. A lot of people rather pay condo prices for homes where they will have total privacy and peace. A condo is just like an apartment, you have neighbors around you, so depending on which floor you live on you may hear noise from the neighbors or they may hear some from you, especially if you play loud music. So no partying! There are some condos that look similar to town homes, which you only have a next door neighbor and you guys share a building/wall so you can't be too loud or if they are loud that sucks. |

everyone who has answered already is right!! But you asked about living, but not necessarily about owning...renting a condo is okay, you can always move, just don't buy one unless you fully understand the pitfalls that could await you...and like some other answerers, i too have owned a condo (or two...or three...) and wouldn't want another one. Heed their advice: condo's are risky, but (only good point?) they ARE better than nothing (usually). |

Neighbors who disrespect the rules and regulation.
Parking, noise and destruction of property are just a few. You will also have some homeowners who do not pay there association payments on time or not at all, which this puts the association at a loss. You will also have special assessment that may come up for future projects. |

Like the others mentioned. It is like an apartment and you do hear everything. I had a second floor condo and the guy below me used to smoke pot and it came through the vents into my unit. I called the police quite a few times and the Association and they couldn't do anything. I personally wouldn't spend that kind of money on a condo, when you can live the same much cheaper in an apartment. Plus they are harder to sell. Also, condos have association dues, however, you don't have to do yardwork. There are also lots of restrictions on what you can and can't do. I would never do it again. |

Hearing things through the walls, and worrying that you are being loud enough for the neighbors to hear you. My husband and I loved living in a condo, but we had to move because we didn't have enough space once we had our first child. Other than that, it is great. |
