What are the extra expenses you have to pay when you buy a home compared to renting?
Looking to buy a home! Need help! I'm pretty clueless on the whole home buying thing! I've been renting for 3 years now probably...

The extra expense is taking care of anything that needs repair like a roof, plumbing, etc. Lawn maintenance can be expensive if you decide to landscape.

I love screwdrivers!
Taxes and the upkeep on your house and home owners insurance!

Well, theirs taxes.....Then there are taxes.....and more (guess what?) taxes!

Then there is the bank. Have to keep them happy too!

And guess what? You have to pay all the repairs!

Hope your sewage line is hooked into the municiple sewar system. If not, there goes about 4 grand when THEY want to do it!

Someone could come along and tell you that your chimney is too tall. You'll have to pay to replace it, or pay a fine.

Your boro you live in will suck you dry if you let them.

They wanted me to pay a streetlight tax. I didn't see a streetlight for 3/8 mile in either direction of my house.

I didn't pay it.

Its stupid crap like that that makes owning a home difficult.

Taxes, insurance, inspections, credit report has to be pulled. Fees that accompany the loan such as discount fees, interest on the loan. There's also down payment and closing fees and title fees. You have to get your utilities put in your name such as water, electricity, gas, trash pickup. Oh, there's a lot to being a homeowner and I'm not talking about the lot as in home site.

you have taxes and insurance number one. and then you have maintance issues. but in a whole buying is worth it! its an investment that will only appericate as long as you keep it up. we can make more cars and stocks and bond rise and fall but real estate is the only thing GOD dosent make anymore of!

bellah_s@sbcglobal.net
The extra expenses are property taxes and insurance. If it's a condo, there's homeowner's association fees. BUT (usually) all you mortgage interest is tax deductable!! That means you file a 1040 and itemize. All that interest offsets what you've paid Uncle Sam.

I'm a renter too, but when you buy you've got mortgage which is probably going to be more than your current rent. You've got water and electric (which will probably be more expensive in a house if you're used to an apt.), and taxes on your land and property I believe. Also, when something breaks, you have to either fix it yourself or pay a professional to fix it. It can be a pain. I remember helping my dad do a lot of stuff when I was a kid. But in the end it's worth it because it's YOURS.

IMHERE!
part of renting is you pay the gass, electricity, water, etc..along with the rent..but i think if you buy a house its more expensive because you don't share the gas, water, or electrcicity with other units! i think it would be more expensive to get a house, but to think about it, you get your own privacy, and its your own property.

yomama23
All kinds of things, the insurance, you have to pay when appliances, a/c and heater and other home essentials break, you have to pay taxes on the home. basically you pay for everything that the landlord has to pay for when you rent lol :-)
