Hollywood | What are the main points to consider when buying a barge/houseboat to live in? |

Many good points made but also make sure you get any potential boat surveyed by a registered surveyor. Its just like a house survey and they will tell you if there are any nasty surprises before committing to purchasing the boat.
Also remember a boat will not increase in value like a house so it is not a very wise investment.
On the plus side if they have all this global warming, rising sea levels thing right you will be laughing as our homes flood!!
Good luck. |

Well you have have the monthly maintenance/slip fee. high heating costs if you're up north.weather damage. If it has a hull it can leak. Get a"foam"hull,no leaks.no building permits needed ,no property taxes and due to maritime law the police need an invite to enter, the coast guard on the other hand...... |

As muncie b says purchasing is a problem if you need to fund with borrowed money. I know nothing about long boats but yachts cost about 15% of value to maintain/insure/mooring. Which explains why they depreciate so quickly. Also how near is the launderette and how do you fancy the walk on a winter's night. Imagine the cold nasty days not the balmy summer's day. Regarding maintenance you will quickly learn or run out of money fast! Good luck A few friends and I toyed with the idea at college. One cold winter quickly decided it for us. |

Mooring fees is a big consideration. |

boats are tricky things to purchase, especially if they are not new. If the hull is wood, you have potential of all kinds of problems. Another problem that often arises is condensation within the boat. Where the boat meets the water, there is a great change in temperature. Some hulls are insulated to prevent condensation from occurring. Some are not. There is nothing worse that attempting to live in a clammy environment.
Mooring fees have already been mentioned.
The engine. Is it diesel? Do you plan on using the engine? Do not purchase a boat that does not have a diesel engine. Too much of a possibility of explosion. |

2 things to consider when buying a boat.
1. There are two good days when you own a boat. The day you buy it and the day you sell it.
2. What do the letters in B.O.A.T. stand for. Bail out another Thousand. |

Why are they selling?
What fees are there for the mooring?
What was last years maintenance costs and have they got receipts?
Are there any known problems either with the houseboat or with people in the local area (ie youths with mischeif in mind)? |

"Is a boat registered like a car?
If you buy a car there is a registration document. If you buy a house there are the title deeds. If you buy a boat there might be nothing at all to show the seller actually owns it. When buying a boat you have to judge the character of the seller because if it isn't his boat you can lose your money and then lose the boat back to its real owner. On the other hand it is very hard to steal a boat because it's not easy to hide.
Recently the "boatmark" scheme has been started. This works much like a car registration document. It is likely that boat builders will adopt this first."
