What are the steps for moving out of a house that you own? (with the whole family)?
I constantly think about moving out of state, but we own a home. If I get a job in another city, what are the logistics for moving out of the house and not getting into a financial nightmare? I currently have mortgage and 2nd mortgage. Had for 3 years. Have a job. No real savings. Usually cash is tight.

Have you had this experience? How did you accomplish a move and how were you able to finance it?

Do your research before you even think about moving. What is the unemployment rate in the new city?
Compare housing prices vs average salary for your current job.
If you have children, how do the school system compare to your current location.

You can go to Yahoo Real Estate and click on Neighborhood Report. This will give you an overview of the schools, crime, weather, income per household, age brackets, etc.

MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE NOT GOING FROM THE SKILLET INTO THE DEEP FRYING PAN!

i put up the house for sale, saved some cash, found a job, find a place to rent or buy and just do it... you can do it all online from finding a place to live to turning on the lights all from where your at id sale what ever you have that you can get else where's that your not using daliy or weekly fo rme this week me and my family are planing to move from arkansas to las vegas will be the third time hopes its a charm
it help if you have some cash and a job before moving that s for sure moving is always a pain in the--- what we do is sell off all we can repack what we know we need then we pack again with waht we really want then find a place and a job then we just go for it sure i know its a chance but thats what life is all about.. right... you must have some sort of a plan to do it is best to start with work places and housing in the city you thinking of going see whats everything is going for. save up enough for a couple months rent for sure helps... i sell my junk at yard sells and ebay you be surprize what you mighty get... after you find a place then look for jobs apply for has many as you can and contact them about it and just do it ... good luck id sell the house soon as i could and stop wasting money trying to think of what should be done and do it

It is really a tough situation to go through.

You need to sell your current house so that you can take whatever equity you have in it to purchase a new home. Since you have to sell you current home in order to drive the move date, it is difficult to get a job somehwere else where they are going to wait for you to move. If a company posts a job, it usually because they have a current need. They are not likely to wait 7 months for you.

Given that the housing market is slow, you will probably have to price your house at or below market to entice buyers.

You can get temporary housing where you are moving to until you find a house that you like. This could be a hotel or there are units like townhomes that you can rent for a short period of time...like a month or two...or even just weeks.

I'm going through this now and we have a company paying for the relocation, but it doesn't make it any easier. Then there is getting kids into schools...etc..

I moved across the country a few years ago. It is NOT cheap to do. The truck rental was $3,000 alone, plus fuel, meals, hotel rooms, etc., etc..

My house was for sale after we left, then my insurance company cancelled my policy because the house was vacant and for sale. Another huge hassle.

The key to this is research. Can you get a job before you go? What is the price of housing where you intend to go? How are the schools? Neighborhoods?

Again, this is not a cheap or easy prospect. You have to be organized and have everything coordinated in order to do this without a bunch of aggravation.

It sounds like you should research other areas and decide where you would want to move and see what jobs are available. Put your house up for sale. There is a book called, "How to Sell Your House in 5 Days." I have read the book but haven't tried it although it sounds like it would work. I got a copy at the library so you might want to check it out and see if it sounds like something you would want to do. I don't think I would feel comfortable leaving a job and moving if I didn't have another job lined up first. Your best bet would be to find a job and rent a house for 6 months to a year. That would give you time to get settled and have the sale of your old house closed. Also, it might free up some money that you could put into savings. And, if you don't like that city you might want to move again. www.city-data.com can give you information on different cities.

Man I moved from Lakenheath England to Panama City Florida. I had two children and a pregant wife, this was tight. The process was very smooth, but one thing that made it smooth was having my company assist me in the move. The company gave us some up front money for the move, and i just paid them back out of my check. This money was great for all the expenses up front. The extra money helped tremendously.
