What can I do to get a house demolished? It has been empty and for sale for over 2 years.?
what can I do to get a house demolished? It has been empty and/or for sale for over 2 years. It is a huge piece of crap and noone will buy it. It is ruining the value of my neighborhood's homes. I have complained multiple times to the county and to the listing agent. The house is literally falling apart and is an eyesore. Since there are no homeless people living there, or trash, maybe noone cares that it is in total disrepair. It needs to go. How do I go about petitioning to get it demolished?

First the fire dept. is not just going to come out and burn down a property without knowing who owns it etc...

Buy the property yourself. Find out what it is listed at and offer tens of thousands less if it has been there 2 years. Does a bank now own it in a foreclosure? Even better offer them tens of thousands less and see what happens.

Um. The house belongs to someone. You'd be trying to get some other person's private property destroyed. I think the chances of that happening are *highly* unlikely.

If you want to do something constructive about the situation, why don't you and the neighbors get together, buy the house jointly, fix it up, and then sell it again at a profit?

I'm sorry, I misread the question. I thought it said that you had a house you couldnt sell. Sorry for my mistake.

Not gonna happen, you could either buy it or move.

The thing about what you're asking is, if you had things your way somebody could do damage to your home if they didn't have the same taste, it's a double edge sward.

Why don't you spread the word that there's a home for same near you and do your community part to help sell it!

Your frustration is compelling...just remember owners of that home are probably as frustrated as you are trying to sell something for 2 years and have unhappy neighborhood in the mean time complaining......they may have a hardship situation that does not allow them to keep it up on top of it... (things do happen) who knows what is a real reason behind every home for sale...Townships and local municipalities most likely have ordinance about property condition and they politely ask owners to comply by addressing peeling paints, unsitely appearance, etc..as they routinely "inspect" neighborhoods for the purpose of keeping communities beautiful in general...May be your township missed that home during the inspection, but check if they do have the ordinance and may send a letter requesting owners to keep it up a little better...Demolishing? It is a private property...and to be respected even if it is not per someone's choice condition..I like the others' suggestions as to buying them out..It is constructive...Or may be your municipality has a ordinance to address it with owners in the mean time...Just remember that listing agent has nothing to do with keeping that property from falling apart :)!...unless he/she is the owner....Best is to consult with local municipality and if there is no ordinance of upkeeping the outside appearance/etc. of the property - may be it is time to have one established in your localle...sounds like you just might be ready to pioneer it.....Good luck.

If someone is keeping current on the property taxes, and the residence is not subject to HOA rules; then there isn't much you can do about it. If it's a fire hazard, you may get it condemed.

Another way around it is to set up an organization to buy the house. Sell shares of it to all the neighbors. For example, if 100 neighbors bought shares, and each share was $1000. Then, you'd have $100,000 to buy the property and demolish it. If the plan was to replace it with a community park, this may be worth everyone's investment.

You have to be an active citizen.
Write letters to the "powers that be".

Gather signatures on a petition.

To bring the matter to the front of everyone's mind and to the top of the agenda, attend the local municipality's meetings and county commissioners meetings. You have to speak up, speak out AND continue speaking up and speaking out.

The saying, "The squeaking wheel gets oiled first.".
is true - BUT you do not get anything accomplished simply by making phone calls and complaining to your neighbors and family.

You have to be "The squeaking wheel".

Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it!
