What can i do if my downstair neighbour doesn't maintain his garden?
Hello.

My kitchen and living room windows overlook my downstair neighbour's back garden.

A year ago, a new owner bought the downstair flat and rents it out. He doesn't take care of the garden much. For example, leaves from the last autumn are still there in a pile. For a while, the renter threw a dead Christmas tree in the back garden.

I have mentioned the garden maintenance issue to him a few times. But he still hasn't done anything.

Though I don't own the garden, the view affects me, and potentially the value of my property.

What can I do in this situation?
Is there some way I can complain to the council? (Hammersmith Fulham Council) to force him to take care of his garden?

Thank you for your advice.

Legally there is likely not much that can be done unless there is a hazard or the lease says something about the garden. If there is a safety hazard then the local council might be able to take action.

As others have suggested see if the owner or even the tenant will give you legal access so you can fix up the place. No idea how access is set up so you might have to go through the tenant's home.

If you want to spend a few pounds contact a solicitor and have the documents reviewed. See if there are any requirements in the contracts.

Why don't you offer to look after his garden for him if it offends so much?

bob
DUDE, shut up, how he maintains his property is his business, if it bothers you, dont look at it.
If it really bothers you, and you are planning to sell, than offer to tidy it up for him for free.

lisa h
i no this may seem cheeky but have you asked him if you can help him out in the garden

Spike
You so bothered do it there could be problems you don't know about try TALKING to him/her My garden is lovely most of the time but I've had problems myself [time, mental health, family,NEXT door, illness]At times things come at you from every where but i can tell you what you will not be helping by moaning talk to the person see if you can help you never know could make you feel a better person,it could be one thing on top of another and you may make things worse by complaining you cant force anyone to do ANYTHING YOU SOUND LIKE A OLD MOANING ***k look elsewhere

Hit him over the head with a shovel and bury him under the patio?

I agree with some of the others. Ask your neighbor if you can use his garden, since he couldn't care less about it, and plant some flowers or grass or whatever.

It's only going to effect your property value if and when you decide to sell.

JANE G
speak to the tenant of the flat, I'm sure they would like a tidy garden to look at, encourage them to put pressure on the landlord to get a maintenance company in to look after the garden this fee could be hidden in the rent.

get a sub machine gun and blow their heads off then dig a big hole and bury them that way you get rid of them and can plant seedlings in the soil that you have turned over easy peasy oh and by the way make sure the next occupant is a local gardener
