What can we do to keep the prior owners of our house from coming around to reminisce?
We recently moved into our dream home in New Jersey and have been living here for about 7 months now. The home was sold to us by an elderly woman whos husband passed away the year before and who also lived with her 30-something daughter and young granddaughter. The seller was very attached to the house, having lived there for 40 plus years, and said that she had to sell due to the high cost of living and maintaining the house all on her own. My wife and I felt sorry for her, but at the same time were eager to close and begin our lives in our first home. It appears that the prior owners have been returning to the neighborhood, sighted by my wife sitting in their car across the street from the house for as long as half an hour, not causing any harm, but just sitting their watching the house. We had reports from our neighbors of the daughter coming by to look through the windows of our home when we were out. This behavior disturbs us both and would like it to end. What can be done?

Use curtain or blinds until she stops or tell her that it is over the line. There is no point to worry if the nuts sit in their car, but tell them about the window. If she does not stop then you have the right to elevate the matter to being nasty.

Have a heart and put yourself in their shoes... it may be you someday!
They'll stop doing it soon.

I would be disturbed if someone was looking in my windows, too. Probably they are just curious as to what their old home looks like now, even though this is not the way to find out! Perhaps you could call and invite them over to show them what changes you have made and that you are taking very good care of what used to be their home. This would give them the opportunity to reminisce and probably make you feel good about making and old woman happy.

Be kind, and invite them in to see the place and see how it has changed. Then they will realize it is different and be less likely to wonder about it. They will not imagine it to be the place they belong once they see it is changed.

I still try to look into my old house's windows when I visit my old neighbor just because I really want to know what they have changed.

40 years is a LONG time to live somewhere and make memories. While I am sure the peeking in the windows was innocent enough and not meant to disturb you, the other responders are right: invite them in to take a look at what you have done to their former home and over time, they will probably stop coming around and will be able to let it go.

Why not befriend these people and allow them to be friends to you and your family? Many elderly people have very good advice for you. and someday the shoe may be on your foot!

All you have to do is call them and invite the whole family to dinner once and that will be closure for them. Make sure they get a tour of the house so they can say their goodbyes and know that it is being taken care of.

La Vie Boheme
If they are just sitting in a car..there is nothing you can do about it. If the neighbor only saw them once, there is nothing you can do about it. All I can suggest that next time you see them, nicely tell them to please stay off the property and perhaps ask your neighbor if she sees them on your property again to call the police.

jd_in_bc
get a dog or make changes to the house

Repaint the house a different color, LOL!!!!
