What do you do if your upstairs neighbors won't be quite?
We live in an apartment, and we're on the bottom floor. Our neighbors that live above us won't be quite! They are constantly moving every hour of every day! The landlord says we can move, but thats not fair. We pay just as much as they do, why should we have to move? The security officer says that he can only take action if you can hear the noise from outside the apartment. And the ladies in the office say call the security officer. We've called the PD twice, and it doesn't seem to be getting any better.
On top of that there is now tension between us and them, and its uncomfortable in the breezeway.
Does anyone else feel like me?? Please tell me we're not the only ones.....

Unfair yes, but unless you move it will only get worse. tba

Are they partying too loud? Or is it just them moving around with everyday noise?

My old neighbor above me used to practice the guitar....and he SUCKED!

I sympathize and it's one reason I own my own home--can't stand sharing a ceiling, floor, or wall with others.

As they've been told and the management knows, you've exhausted those options. You run the risk of this problem ANYWHERE you live where you share a wall or such, so even if you moved you have no guarantees things would be better (and being on the top floor does NOT remove all noise issues either). If you basically like the place, you can try various things to deaden the noise--if it's particularly troublesome when you're trying to sleep, a "white noise" machine or even just a noisy fan could drown out a lot of it. Some lavendar essential oil on the pillows can help you relax and induce sleep. You could try earplugs as well.

Outside of that, you probably will need permission of the landlord to try anything else--there are ceiling soundproofers--

Are some sites that have products.

Sorry, I wish I had a great solution. Been there, done that (opted for fan as I'm not wealthy.)

As a landlord, I am ashamed that your landlord won't help you in this matter. You have just as much right to a "quiet" living environment as the upstairs neighbors. If you can't get anywhere with anyone....I would suggest you find another apartment for your own peace of mind. Check and make sure you have either an apartment with no neighbors above you....or rent a house that keeps the neighbors away in other houses.

This totally sucks! I lived in apartments before and i tell you what. This is why i always tried to get an upstairs apartment.

At any rate if you have exhausted all your options i would now go BACK to the office and let them know you have called the police department 2 times and i am assuming you have called security as well and you would like and explanation of why they are still living there. PERIOD. You can say it in a nice but firm way.

If they insist on these people living there then i would ask them if you could move to another apartment in the building. I know i know it sounds horrific but the only other option is to get an Attorney.

However. There is another way. I called the Company who owned the complex i lived in one time. You know those people in the office simply manage. There are people who over see them. And if you go in and ask them who the management company is? That might be another option for you as well.
You see i called the property management company itself and left a message. Guess what? The guy came out and knocked on my door and wanted to know just what was going on and sat down with me and we had a heart to heart.

Good luck. It is a headache but unfortunately that is the price of Apartment living. >:(

I have been in that position. I approached some kids who lived above me. I suggest that you keep calling the Police Department, and notify the front office every time you call. They won't appreciate this because other residents will think that the property is going downhill. Also, I do not know what state you are in, but put this in writing repeatedly to the office. Also try to get other neighbors to have your back.

Depending on how mature they are, I would suggest leaving a nice note, asking them if they would please tone it down a little bit to be considerate to you. It worked for a neighbor that my husband and I used to have.

Although, since you've already had the police come out and such, those pleasantries may be too late.

I can totally relate. When I lived on the bottom floor of an apartment building my upstairs neighbor was very "active" during the wee hours and would keep me awake for hours.

Have you communicated with your noisey neighbors? I ended up writing a note and my neighbor was not only embarrassed, but very apologetic. The noise stopped.

I hope you get some peace and quiet!

Well I have lived in an apt before and that is typical apt living. Everyone goes through it if they have ever lived in an apt. There is nothing that is anyone from the complex can or is willing to do about it. They pay for their apt just the same way that you do and so because that is what they pay for they can be as loud or quiet as they want to. Just the same that you feel that you shouldn't be asked to move, why should they if they pay their rent on time? Some families are not as respectful of that type of living as others and the only thing that you can really do about it is ask them yourself to maybe be quiet after 9pm so that you can get to bed. I think that if you say, you know I get up early and need to be in bed by 9 but am unable to, would you mind trying to keep it down after 9 it would be greatly appreciated they might try just because you asked them and aren't trying to get them in trouble. Also, do these people have kids? If so you need to expect that they are going to be a bit louder than someone who doesn't. Once again I am so sorry for your lack of peace and quietness but that is what you get when anyone lives in an apt.

Ask them to shut the hell up!

Have you tried talking to your neighbors? They are probably mad at you for calling the PD and now they are intenionally being noisy to drive you crazy. I would just try a friendly chat. Other than that, there really isn't much you can do. The landlord isn't going to kick out a paying tenant just because they are noisy, so hopefully you can get your neighbors to like you more and then they will respect you. You should also probably tell them that you are sorry for calling the PD (even if you aren't) because they are probably pretty mad about that...I know I would be. Good luck!

Enchantress
Well.. two solutions.
1. talk to your neighbours over a cup of tea.. or in the hallway even!
2. if they dont listen.. feed them their medicine! make more noise. :)
good luck!

love2dance
my neighbors were like this and I just went over and talked to them about it....and problem was solved. if they would have kept it up though, I would have called the cops....then started making more noise then them to show them how it feels!
