Like any profession, Agents run the spectrum as to the type of people they are.
Some are awesome, and worth their weight in gold.
Others are incompetent and worthless. |

I'd say anyone who has to earn a living on a job which is 100% commission not only doesn't have great judgment in regard to their own interests but is going to be very, very tempted to bend the truth on my occasions. |

I agree with Birdie, i think there are honest Estate Agents out there that pride themselves on being honest and remaining dignified.
unfortunately most of those shark estate agents give that minority a bad name. |

They are people like you and me trying to make a living in this twisted world. I think that their reputations are based on the fact they we are charged to much for their services. People say that they are liars and cheats, well I must agree that they stretch the truth a bit and will manipulate a house sale should there be more than one party wanting to buy a property. This said are they any worse than car salesmen? I have only purchased 2 houses and really had no trouble that I didn't foresee. It is very hard to make a living out there at the moment and many have been laid off. The last house I put on the market was written up badly and had to point out the correct details. I guess they are no different than the rest of us. |

What is an Estate Agent? |

Being a lettings agent in London I get called all of the above, except I have never lied about a property, misled someone or cheated anyone. I am honest and very polite, I have never received a complaint and have eight compliments so far this year alone on my record.
The business is very hard though and some feel to be success that they need to be done with their applicants as soon as possible, they can be very disconnected and that makes them appear distant and uncaring. Some companies promote this attitude others do not. It can become for some all about the money but you get people like that in every field especially in London. There are those willing to do anything to succeed and sacrifice who ever to achieve it, they are the minority but they give us a bad name as we are still technically a service industry.
The final point to remember of course and this is the one that catches a lot of people out, the agent is paid by the landlord out of their earnings from the let through commission, the landlord is their customer not the person walking through the door. We are employed to find a tenant for the property not the property for the tenant. I know it sounds harsh but its the truth. |

How true most of these comments are. I have just sold a house, and only one out of 6 people working for different agents was any good at all, and he was not making any money out of me. Older honest and more important know his job. |

I have worked for a conveyancing solicitor for years and have direct dealings with estate agents. Many are fine, but the younger, over enthusiastic ones tend to be very pushy. They work with 'commission commission commission' in mind and often fail to remember that house sales involve legal work to be done, rather than merely selling a house, drawing up a contract and getting paid. As you can probably tell, I am not a huge fan but admit that there are plenty of honest, efficient estate agents out there. |
