jojo | What does the term leasehold on a house mean? |

Leasehold as already said means you dont own the land, which is usualy the case for flats because more than one owner is on the same piece of land.
Some houses are also lease hold usually have long term leases on them so its not a problem. You can also have the chance to buy the lease in some cases which in affect turns in into a freehold |

You own the property but not the piece of land it sits on. The property leases the piece of land and you can therefore sell on the leasehold.
The opposite is Freehold whre you DO own the land also. Most properties in Scotland are this basis. |

You dont own the land and pay the landlord ground rent each year, usually not that much. After a few years, i cant remember how many, you can buy the lease at a fair and reasonable price from the landlord and your house will then be freehold. This is easy to do, any solicitor will advise |

It means that you never own the land, as in a flat where several properties are on the same spot! You only take the lease for a given number of years, although you can sell it on.
Freehold is the best option! |

It means that someone else owns the freehold to the property - i.e. they own the property outright. Leasehold means that whoever rents the property can live there as long as they pay the rent for the duration of their agreement |

My husband has a shop which is controlled by a lease. It has just been extended for 15 years, after that time It will have to be renegotiated. |

leasehold is another way for you to buy a property. Unless I am mistaken it is, in essence, renting - which is to say you are buying an interest in a property for a certain length of time. From what I gather a rental is typically for a much shorter period of time. A leasehold may be decades or as long as 99 years in many instances. You CAN sell a leasehold. Whatever you get, just read the contract. It will spell out the terms. If you are committing to anything long term, have your attorney review.
Regards,
Joe... |
