Check with your bank to see if the first check has cleared your account. If it has not, put a stop pay on it. You'll probably get a fee for it. You can pass it on to your landlord if you're brave enough. (Not a very good way to start a business relationship!) Once you've gotten the stop pay on the check, just write another one.

If it has already cleared your account, get a copy of the front and the back of the check. (This sometimes takes a few days.) and present it to your landlord. If he has cashed or deposited the check already, then he's probably lying to you and just wants to get paid twice. If that's the case, better to find out now! I would not rent from him in that case.

Check with your bank and make sure the first check didn't clear. If it did, get a copy of it from them and that'll tell you who deposited or cashed it and when. If it hasn't cleared, then stop payment on that one and give your landlord a new one. Make sure you tell him you're stopping payment on the first one so if he finds it, he won't try to do anything with it. Some banks will waive the stop payment fee if a check is lost in the mail or something like that.

Just cancel the original check and write another.

Of course.

Put a stop-payment on the first check and have him reimburse you for the fee.

If you lost your paycheck wouldn't you expect your job to replace it or should they just say "but we have a receipt, too bad for you!"?

It sounds like a scam to me.

If you do give him a replacement check, make sure you put a stop payment on the first one. You will have to contact your bank for this.

I would make him pay for the fee to stop payment on the check. if he didn't want to pay then I would not write another check.

kingstubborn
Stop payment on the first check if the landlord agrees to deduct or pay the fee for that action.

It is no big deal.

Your landlord sounds like a real jerk!! I would go to the bank and ask them if your check has been cashed. If it is have them check and see if has been endorsed. then you can see if your landlord cashed it or not. If the check hasn't been posted, tell them you want to do a stop payment on the check. It might cost a few like $20.00 but its worth it you don't want both checks cashed. After you get done with this deal, I suggest moving to a place where people are actually nice and like having you as tenants. Good luck..

Sam
That is his problem. However, if the check was never cashed, you cannot expect the deposit back when you move out.
