Whatever you want, it is abandoned property.

First of all, you have to have made some kind of attempt to get it back to them. If you break any of it, or throw it away, you could be sued. You need to check with your state laws. There is a time frame on this kind of thing in every state. Check with the local authorities on how long you have to hold this stuff. If they do try to sue you, you are entitled to a 'storage fee' of some sort, as long as you didn't make it impossible for the person to get their things. Whatever you do, do not throw these things out, or break any of it, because you will be held responsible. Check the local laws and then make your decision on what to do.

Send her a certified letter that she has two weeks to pick up her belongings or they will be left with Goodwill or in the trash. Make sure you get a signature with the certified letter.

Try to contact them.

As long as courts are not involved ... give them a time frame that is reasonable, to remove their things. If they are not removed by the agreed time, then you would be free to sell or throw out as you please.

Call them & give it to them
or tell them to come back to get it.
Mail it to them?

Can you contact them? If there is no way you can get a hold of your old roommate then you can get rid of their stuff.

First, it depends on what you want to do with the items. If you want to dispose of the items because they are cluttering your apartment, you should call the roommate and see what s/he wants to do with them.

If you want to keep the items, this is also possible, but there is a bit of a process to this. Some states require the tenant's belongings to be stored for 30 days after it was filed that they left the residency. on the 31st day, the items are yours to do what you wish (ie. keep them, sell them, throw them away.)

Check up on the laws in your state, but 30 days of storage seems to be the most common.

I hope this helps.

Try to contact the former roommate, if this is not possible, do you know someone that can get the things to them. If you haven't had any luck with contact, then depending on what was left, donate the things to salvation army or yard sale them. Good luck.

inconvenient tRuTh
attempt to contact them to see if they want the stuff, if you cant get ahold of them, give the stuff to goodwill.

cougar
They had 2 weeks by law to get their belongings. Now you can donate the stuff or sell it for any money they owe you. But time is up.

It appears this stuff is not that important to your former roommate,it was abandoned property, so you can do what you want to with it.3 months is enough time for this person to come and get it or ask you to take care of this stuff,it appears this was not the case.If you haven't already done so ,contact this person if possible or find someone who can and try to get this stuff back to the owner. This would show consideration of this person by you, however this person should be considerate of you as well.

READ the lease, check out state LL/Tenant law. Usually after 10 days, when they left with no intent to return, they can be disposed of, but sometimes they have to be stored.

Be a nice person and call ex-roommate and ask them about the stuff, give them a 2 week deadline to get them before they go to Goodwill or Amvets.

Othniel
Did you have a written lease agreement? If so that should give you some orientation. Next, consult the landlord tenant act for your State which will address the issue of abandoned property.

There is most likely a time frame established by State law and a clause that requires that you make a verifiable effort to contact the former tenant.
